I wouldnt says one performs better than the other, they are very similar stats wise and any performance difference would be negligible. For it me comes down to aesthetics and weather would want to run fans from your boards RGB header using your boards RGB software or use the Lian Li control box. Depending on your board and how many fines your installing I would think you'd need extra RBG control box as you may risking overloading your boards RGB header. Something you would have to check first.
Got al120
Though pretty sure there's a version 2 now
Possible issues aren't d30 thicker than standard?
30mm thick?
Depends on build and radiators but that extra 5mm
Might matter
And pretty sure you can if you want to
Control the al120 rgb from the motherboard header
Instead of the Control box
Mine (original al120) there's a jst connector on them
Just need jst to 5v 3 pin argb header adapter
Can't remember if the al120 had one in the box
I just daisy chained the al120 off my phanteks led strips
then to motherboard bypassing the lian li Control box
As those already have an extra jst connector
And yeah I used an argb splitter
Even though my board can run a crazy stupid amount
Of leds off each header
