Alan Wake returns to Steam!

Never understood why game devs negotiate "time limited" licences, surely they know it will cause problems down the line?

I suppose it is cheaper in the short term and if the game is a success, they have the cash to renegotiate.

I loved it when it came out. Mostly because it was like playing a Stephen King book. The mechanics were nothing special and it'll look a bit dated by now, but if you like that kind of story then it's worth playing.American nightmare wasn't bad either

For me this game is a bit like S.T.A.L.K.E.R - the actual game that came out is a shadow of the original intention and falls far short of the early (actual ingame) promotional work and I kind of couldn't bring myself to really play either with a concept of how they were originally intended in the back of my mind.

That's because it was repurposed from being a PC lead title to cutting it back to work on the Xbox 360 instead of the other way round. MS fully funded the game to the tune of $40m over 5 years so Remedy scaled it back eventually to fit into the console limitations. Nowadays you can also play it & Nightmares on the Xbox1X via the 360 emulation but it looks very poor compared to the PC Steam version as the emulator does not upscale very well & its still the same 8 year old game engine.

To me this signals Alan Wake 2 is about to be announced. Why else renew the license £££££££ and sell it mega cheap on steam
Alan Wake 2 is still a pipe dream as no publisher is interested in it apparently (Alan Wake did not sell that well at all & cost $40M to develop!) so Remedy are hoping to someday get a big name publisher to fund it. Alan Wake was fully funded by MS & cost $40M over the 5 years dev time & many changes in technical specifications (it went from PC as the lead platform using GFWL to being an Xbox 360 title so the game scale got cut back & a lot of dev work was thrown away to fit the console).

It is such a great game and scared me witless in places due to its amazing atmosphere. There was one section in a forest where I had to meet some kidnapper. Just pushing myself to go from one lit up lamppost to another was taxing as hell.

It became a bit too predictable towards the end but on the whole it was an excellent game. Shame it was in development hell for so long though as that resulted in a very different game (like freelancer) by the time it finally released.

This is why mods exist. Stalker with a decent mod is an amazing experience and if you like atmospheric horror games then you can't really do much better. Metro comes close, but it has that console polish that seems to detract from the gritty atmosphere.

Alan Wake is a decent game and I remember it looking great when I played it when it first arrived on Steam. Although i will say that the combat does end up becoming repetitive and a little bit tedious towards the end and especially in the dlc. I found I had to force myself to complete the dlc. Well worth picking up for that price though.
