If you are looking for something lighthearted and catchy, with songs about drugs sex and fighting, you can't really gow rong with Guns N Roses appetite for destruction

Jenny Lewis With The Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat (Alt Folk i suppose)

The Strokes - First Impressions Of Earth (indie rock)

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Ballad Of The Broken Seas (indie)

Explosions In The Sky - The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place

Like Sigur Ros, but wholly instrumental. Incredible stuff.

Arcade Fire - Funeral (indie, lots of instrumentation, very lush}

Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West (American indie)

Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around (country/rock)

The Decemberists - Picaresque (off-kilter indie pop)

The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I (see above)

I was gonna recommend something apart from indie, but I reckon those are ones your more likely to like on first listen, and are all pretty safe bets.

dream theatre- octavarium
massive attact- collected
pink floyd- dark side of the moon

only listened to the dream theatre album so far and its amazing i absolutely love it
