Hi,

Looking at getting the steering wheel re-trimmed in my Clio as it's peeling (Common fault with the faux leather Renault use) and was looking at getting it done in full alcantara however I'm worried about how it would fair with regular use?

I had a regular suede wheel in my last car and after a while all the fibres went flat and nasty, is alcantara more resistant to this kind of wear?

Depends on how greasy your palms are on a regular basis. I've seen Alcantara wheels that look like they have been gripped by people with chip fat fingers. Grim.

I'd also buy steering wheel plastic covers when dropping the car off to service and MOT. No matter how good the outfit is, mechanics always manage to get some oil or auto grease on there. Easy to clean on leather, not so on Alcantara.

I'm toying with the idea of getting my wheel re-trimmed in Alcantara when the leather starts to get shiny along with the gear knob and gaiters just so it all looks matching. I really like the comfort of it over leather on those bits of the cabin.

Apologies for resurrecting the dead with this thread, but I'm interested in a similar query to the OP.
I'm considering having my MX5 leather wheels bound in Alcantara by RoyalWheels. Anyone think this is a bad idea for a daily driver?

To me, the MX feels "special", mainly because it's not trying to dumb everything down like our BMW does. So the alcantara option really appeals and I get the impression that the price won't be killer (sub £150ish).

They get manky after a while, even if you don't have greasy skin they make your hands sweaty because the material isn't very breathable. They are intended to be used with gloves really.

I hate the stuff :P and would not bother, as mentioned it can soon get worn looking/go flat. better off with leather, or do part leather where you grip and the rest in alcantra or something

a bit of soapy water quickly cleans them
