Hi peeps

Just before Christmas I followed a really old recipe to make buttered beer. It was ok, not great hot but pretty nice cold with a little milk and maple syrup.

The main failing was the beer I used was quite hoppy and quite bitter. I used London Pride. When it was hot it's not unpleasant but it is an odd taste. I was looking for some suggestions of ales that are low on aroma hops and not too bitter. So rather than use google or similar I thought I'd ask the most informed body of citizens I could find.....sadly they weren't available so do you lot have any ideas :D

Did a blog post on it if anyone is interested.

Butter beer as in Harry Potter?? Had some at Universal Studios years ago, you need some cream soda!

Yeah I've seen the youtube videos that recreate it when doing my research. But I was making real butter beer, just for the giggles, from an Elizabethan recipe.

I'm also planning a non acoholic version using powdered butterscotch sweets as the prime flavouring but I'd like to improve on my alcoholic real butter beer recipe with a more appropriate ale.

I expect styles have changed a fair bit since Elizabethan times. I'd try something like Mann's brown ale, or even possibly a stout or porter like Guinness.

Mann's is a good call. Not sure about stout, lower acid but has a bitterness from the dark malts. But maybe I'll give it a go. I'll do 1 pint testers for my next go and see how they work.

Thx

I'm not a massive fan of it normally but would Old Speckled Hen work?
That's not hoppy and not too bitter.
It's a reasonably local to me so easy to get, not sure about other parts of the country. But Wye Valley brewery make something called Butty Bach that's a decent beer as well.
