Thoughts on the car above there now sub 5k and have been readying up about it, the engine seems largely reliable from what I've read all be it not great on fuel IE 30-35 mpg. what are peoples thoughts on it ? bargin or money pit ?

I've read that before, for a diesel they get rubbish mpg. I get more than that from my 1.6ecoboost 182 Focus. They're also supposed to be not that great to drive. Didn't Alfa also do a 1.9 dag dag?

Only options for it are the gm 2.2 direct injection and the non busso v6 there was the very last 2.0 petrol but we'll out of price range

Thirsty. Heavy. Oddly slow for the engine size! I still think they're very pretty though.

Own a 2.2 JTS Brera.
Right now at 27mpg. Thirsty, heavy (diesels more so) and (relatively) slow is true. But pretty! And nice to drive
Everyone recommends the 1750 Tbi engine, and consequently they are much more expensive and rare.
Don't think it's a money pit, but it's no Micra either.

They are a suspension upgrade away from being a decent car to drive, setup is far too soft, think comfy Gt cruiser in stock trim, I test drove the Prodrive S 2.2 and V6 when they came out and they were tidy handling cars, the 2.2 didn’t feel fast but it could cover ground well.

I had a 2.4 diesel Brera for 3 months when my Alfa GT was in for a repair, it was a bit laggier than the 1.9 I owned but once you learned to drive around it as you do with most turbos I quite enjoyed it, had a reasonable engine note and really good torque. I didn't pay attention to fuel economy by that point I had realized whether a car does 60 mpg or 35mpg it makes very little difference to my life in reality even at 25k a year.

From what I've heard (I can't fully confirm this, but it is something to look into in more detail) regarding the suspension is that it is the same setup as is used on the 1.9, with the heavier bigger engine it can cause damage to various low parts under the car, mainly the oil sump, etc.

Also the gearbox is the same as the 1.9 which is known to have issues with one of the bearing (can be heard with a whine in 6th on lift off if it's on it's way out). The extra power of the 2.4 could cause issues with this.

On the upside a lot of the parts are shared with GM cars of the same era, mainly the Astra, so are quite readily available.

1.9 uses and M32 gearbox, 2.4 an F40 both are indeed GM based. never heard of the suspension cause a sump issue but bit out of touch these days.

Interesting, I always thought it was the M32 box with both engines, in that case I've not heard of issues with the F40. The sump issue I read about on a forum a couple of years ago when I was looking for something as a daily driver but I was put off with the quite frankly poor fuel economy to power ratio of the car. I've not heard the engine note on them though, the T5 engine in my Focus ST sounds good, not sure on a 5 pot diesel though!
