I'd rather have a decent Fiesta. The last Mito I tested was one of the new TwinAir ones and, besides being hilariously inefficient, it felt very dated, poorly built and archaic.

The equivalent Volkswagen Up and Skoda Citigo that we had in at the time were also leaps and bounds ahead.

My mate took one out for a test drive a few months ago and I went with him.
It broke down on the test drive, no joke! Poor steering went, leaving with super heavy steering and then all electrics died after pulling over. We walked back to the garage (only half a mile away) told them where it was and handed the keys back, salesman just looked sheepish.

Also I used to own a Grande Punto and it was exactly the same inside bar styling and the Alfa badge, save a few grand and get one of those instead if you like the car.

I had one for 3 years.

170bhp. 31.3mpg with me pulling away from every junction like a complete loon. 0-60 in I think it was under 7.5 seconds.

Mine was an early limited edition (not the cloverleaf even though I think it shared the same engine, was actually veloce trim though) with a lot of non standard gear however, 4pot brembos, 18" anthracite alloys, PZero's. Interior quality was good, no squeaks or rattles the whole time I had it.
Great fun to drive, really stuck to the road well, exhaust note was really nice too. Steering could feel a tiny bit...detached...when in Dynamic mode. Very comfortable seats.

Sucked in the snow. Paintwork chipped relatively easily.

Only problems I had with mine was the suspension whereby I went through 3 drop links and 2 coil springs. We (myself and Alfa) later figured out it was due to incorrect suspension set up and after they adjusted it I had no more problems and the ride was a lot more comfortable.

I still miss it now.

Done 25,000 miles so far in my Mito. Its the 1.4MA engine with a dual clutch gear box.
average of 42mpg from a tank full.
does me for commuting, leave it in auto & just plod along, though the last 4 miles are fast A road, so into Dynamic, gearbox into manual and watch the mpg plummet :)

I had one as a hire car. It was great fun thrashing around Italian mountain roads - the handling felt sharp and the 1.6 diesel engine wasn't too underpowered, despite sounding like a tractor.

The interior was much the same as any other small car really - very basic with lots of plastic, but it felt fairly well screwed together and practical.

One negative point I noticed was that it felt very, very cramped inside, especially in the back seats. Obviously it's a small car so I wasn't expecting much, but it felt distinctly smaller than a fiesta/corsa, and I don't recall the boot being that impressive either.

Overall, if I was looking for a small car I'd consider one, but I can't help thinking they're a bit overpriced atm considering what you're actually getting for your money.

It's a fun nippy car, quite good looking, but nothing special. I quite enjoyed it, but it's small inside, and expensive to fix (more so than a Focus for example) when things go wrong.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I am looking for a good looking car that is fairly efficient. I am not really into the idea of a Fiesta. Any other suggestions?

Looks are subjective (though you wouldn't believe it on this forum. Meow!!!)

What efficiency are you aiming for? If you're not bothered by much else then this opens up your scope of car.

Isn't it a Fiat Grande Punto underneath ?

The majority of it yes, which also means it shares a bit with the corsa D as well. Same chassis if memory serves.

With regards to the cost, well yes and no. The majority of things I'd say are reasonable partly because some punto and corsa parts are actually interchangeable. There are a few bits like the power steering sensors which require a whole new steering column which do leave you thinking what the hell was they thinking. That being said any brand next to ford is expensive to fix though. But fun is probably what I'd use to describe it too and indeed you are correct there's not a huge amount of space, in the back in particular but i'm not a giant mountain of muscle and body hair so wasn't an issue for me :p

Exactly. I'm glad somebody agrees. It's rubbish and the S600L will absolutely trounce it in a race.

Fox is, as per usual, completely right and his advice should be followed to the letter. :D

Well as you may notice I own one. Would I take one in the guise you propose (1.4 NA poverty spec)? No. Paint does chip really easily on these, that being said a lot of people with new cars I know appear to be having this problem so maybe it's not just alfa on this. On the contrary to the other poster I found mine great in the snow, by comparison my mums fiesta Zetec-s can't make it up our hill in even a little snow, never had to abandon the Mito once in the last bout of snow. I'd also go for one with the blue & me system so you have bluetooth etc. Is there any major problems to worry about on the 1.4 NA? well off the top of my head bar power steering thing I mentioned earlier which isn't massively common and suspension top mounts but after that it's pretty much all the usual stuff associated with cars. The 155 and 1.6 diesels appear to be the most troublesome. Just don't use alfa dealers for anything, the worse dealer network I have ever encountered. Insurance I have found to be pretty good though.

The Mito itself isn't a bad car, hell I picked one over the likes of the fiesta. That being said I couldn't find anything about the fiesta I could say I loved so I don't share the same high opinion of it others do. It just did everything well but instilled absolutely no emotion in me whatsoever so understand why you may not want one. Plus I felt build quality to be distinctly average on the fiesta so didnt even get that feel of it being a well built car. Don't know how far the new polo has dropped but I'd take one of them in a flash over the rest of the competition for what you want. I get through a lot of the little hatchback class cars as hire cars through work (I'm not important enough for anything good) and in my opinion the new polo is the best out of the bunch right now. I'm happy when I get given polos and despair when i get fabias (the interior and the way it drives and driving position is just wrong, funny how a car in theory the same is so different)

Any particular questions fire away but quite frankly go test driving, I was all set on either a fiesta zetec-s or RS clio (sensible option vs not so for those wondering why the disparity) and ended up with something I hadn't even contemplated buying. Also big service (cambelt etc.) on the Mito is 5 years on mine and probably is the same on the NA so bare that in mind on an 09 car.

bit of a hodge podge of a post but hey ho!

Word of warning on that engine. It is the 1.4 Starjet out of the Grande Punto (unless I'm mistaken) and while it is actually quite a refined little lump with a nice relaxed cruise at 70 when mated to a six speed box it...

A) Feel a bit gutless down the lower end of the revs. Not really a problem for me but my wife thought it was broken after her 1.4 8v Polo until I told her not to fear the tacho.

B) 47MPG is never going to happen. On decent length trips I average high 30's to very low 40's, on very rare occasions I get higher. Best has been 45MPG on a steady motorway cruise.

For similar money I'd be looking at one of these - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201308028122094

In my opinion a nicer looking car (subjective) but a much more lively engine.

Just my 2p :)

I am not totally fixed on that engine. I dont mind going up to a 1.6 or something around there. At the moment I am getting about 30 in my Astra. Anything more than that maybe around the 40 mark would be ideal.

Cheers guys
