Hey guys, just thought I would introduce myself.

I am relatively new to custom PC building, but once you start you can't stop. I think the consumerist nature of striving for slightly higher numbers, no matter what the cost, has hit me... so I need a good forum, full of sensible people who know what they are talking about, to slap me around the face when I get histerical.

I am sure I have found that here right?

I currently reside in West Berks, but have lived in London and Portsmouth for the last 6-7 years.

My current set up has blown up after leaving it in storage for 3 months... so I am salvaging my harddrives, GPU and a few other bits and bobs... and starting again. The plan is as follows:

CPU: i5 2500k 3.3ghz (new)
GPU: Asus ATI Radeon 5870 (old)
PSU: TX650 corsair (old)
MOBO: Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z micro-atx Z68 1155 (new)
Case: Fractal Design R3 mini - micro atx case (new)
HDD: 7500rpm Sumsung HDD 1TB (old) + 500gb Crucial 7500rpm (old)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x4gb DDR3 1600mhz (old)
Cooling: Corsair H60 water cooling (new)

New and Old representing whether it has been taken from my old system or not. Any advice, slaps, spitting etc... direct it at me and I hope I can contribute in some way to the forum too.

Thanks!

Welcome! :)

And posting that info in the General Hardware section will get you your advice, here is not very active ;)

But I think it looks rather nice.

welcome to overclockers alfie :)

i'm not usually in this section myself, but since im here i'll recommend something in this thread (but going to general hardware would be best)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £167.99
1 x MSI Z68A-GD55-G3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £124.99
1 x Cooler Master Silencio RC-550 Silent Tower Case - Black £69.98
1 x Antec Kúhler H2O 920 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366/AM2/AM2+/AM2+/AM3+) £64.98
Total : £442.04 (includes shipping : £11.75).

changed the motherboard to take advantage of MSI's VAT back scheme (meaning you get a £125 motherboard for ~£105, and the price of the upgrade becomes ~£422). its also a much better motherboard because:
- its full ATX size (meaning you can go crossfire with your 5870 without suffocating it). to go crossfire you will need a bigger PSU, but thats something to worry about if/when you decide to go crossfire
- it will support PCIe gen3 when you upgrade to ivybridge. (meaning that the next gen graphics cards wont be bottlenecked by the motherboard)

i changed the case because fractal design have had a lot of complaints about build quality. i tried to get a case in a similar style with built in insulation as well

changed the cooler because its miles better. the antec 920 is equivalent to the corsair H80, but is the price of the H60, so a massive win there
