Alien Vs Predator-Requiem

I went in expecting very little in terms of plot and acting. Thats what i got.

But for me a quality film is dependant on its characters. Unfortunately i felt nothing for any of the humans, the sherrif was likeable but not enough to carry the film.

The Predator however was fantastic. He never spoke or showed much emotion, but I could do nothing but root for the guy. This felt like his story with the humans as a sub plot. This could have been Predator 3.

With the right attitude of not expecting too much and asking very little questions this film is pretty awesome.

Ok guys I just got back from watching this... I must admit after all the reviews i've seen I was expecting some ****-fest full of appallling acting and little/no decent action. WTF are you guys on, the film rocks!

The first 10 minutes was awesome, very well done, with the glimpse of the aliens breaking loose and the predators homeworld. I was even entertained through the "ooman" parts where you got to see the fit-arsed blonde try and seduce the pizza boy. Oh God her arse was probably the finest I have seen in a long time... *touches self*

Ahem anyway back to the main nitty gritty... the special effects weren't too bad, and the scale of it was much larger than I was expecting... some people made it sound like it was all based around a house and three rooms, but what I saw did a decent portrayal of a town getting royally screwed.

The aliens were more than passable, suitably menacing, and the Predator was done as well as any of the first two films... I though they did pretty bloomin well there. It was as a predator should be, hard as nails and they certainly didn't skimp out with giving a 'Preds-eye-view' of the action, you got a great sense of the tech he was using and how he fought. Pretty canonical if you ask me in that regard. The predalien was the weakest aspect of the lot in that respect but meh, I could live with it without too much trouble.

Also I kept seeing people posting to mewl "It was too dark, you couldn't see anything". Well i'm no Carl Zeiss lense but I didn't have any trouble making out the action... did you expect the sewers to be floodlit or have strategically placed chandeliers lighting up the place? It was dark yes, but that was te ambience and I for one didn't have any trouble with keeping tabs on what was going on.

Another thing I really appreciated was the "I don't care if they're woman, child, pregnant, infirm... they will get killed" style approach. Too many films wuss out on aspects like this, and what we got was an alien literally going into a hospital maternity ward and working its way down a line of expectant mothers. The scene where the docor is looking at the monitors as they all start to flatline was awesome, and really gave a sense that no punches were being pulled. The way they also weren't afraid to have any member of the main cast killed unexpectedly was also a welcome change... and really made me feel like it was pure chaos, all hell breaking loose.

So on to the main actors... ok they aren't going to win any oscar nominations, but they also weren't anywhere close to being as "teen emo" as I was expecting them to be. It felt like you were following a desperate bunch of fleeing teens, not some Rambo-esque bunch of invulnerable cocky ****'s who were wise-cracking every three minutes with a big grin on their face. They did the job adequately.

Yes there were some plot holes best left ignored but lets face it, this film is not the type that you go to watch expecting an intricately woven masterpiece, the film is designed to give an illusion of aliens eating people while being stalked by some badass dreadlocked alien from the planet psychosis2. Which again, it did.

All in all I really liked this film... and I consider myself a pretty harsh critic most of the time. I would give this film a genuine 7/10, hell maybe even a close 7.5/10, and i'll watch it again when it comes out in Hi-Def. :D

I totally agree, I would have pretty much said the same stuff last week but couldn't be bothered to type it all out.

AVP is the kind of thing youd sit and ponder when ya a youngen, wich one would be better, faster or stronger and you all say wow that would be cool they should do that. when infact it should stay in the playground because its a really bad idea.
Freddie vs Jason springs to mind when i say this and thats worse i would say. i mean come on robocop vs the terminator would be pretty cool if your 13 but when ya old enough to go earn money and pay to watch a movie things like that are just plane stupid.
I have to agree with a previous poster that the things that could have been done with the Alian movies would be phenomenal but the slightest chance of that now is 6 or 7 years down the line when people have forgot and forgiven for the crap there ramming down our throat now!

it was pretty good fun action but i dont think it was great tbh, the chopper crash at the end and the crash set were both awefull.

Agree, having played both games to death I really enjoyed the film as a lot of the ideas where taken specifically from AVP2 the game which was nice to see.

SPOILER ALERT

The predator using his plasma pistol to kill aliens, directly out of AVP2 as the alien killing weapon of choice! My cousin commented on why didnt the predators bomb go off when the predalien killed it as he armed it but playing AVP 1 answers that as well, predator suicide tech needs a heartbeat to start it off as a fail safe and the predalien kills him before he starts it ^^

Kids getting killed, people getting killed in front of kids, main character members getting maimed or killed without prio notice etc all made it quite interesting and whilst the ending was abit meh I loved the yutani woman being in it as weyland is in the first one. The company Weyland-Yutani owns the nostromo in the first alien film and tells it to land and the atmospheric processor in aliens is also owned by them. Good way of merging plot lines imho

Thanks for the links further up penski; I've always been interested in the Aliens story, and as I grew older the Predator one.

I actually enjoyed the original AvP - I could understand it wasn't going to be as good as it's constituent parts. It was just a good, mindless action film. I agree about the Predators not being tall enough, they just didn't seem as imposing as they should. Although I suppose next to Aliens, they wouldn't seem as big. I'll no doubt enjoy this one too.

Its a nonsense way of merging plot lines.

You only have to think for 10 seconds to realize why it makes no sense what so ever.

Compared to Alien and Aliens this film was drivel, if you could give that a 7.5 then you must think Punch is Judy is La Traviata, there was little to no plot, the characters were shallow and sterotypical and it did absoluletly 0 for the franchise!

If that's the best Hollywood can do then I really hope we never see another Alien or Predator film, I can't see Cameron or Scott ever making another Alien film after this travesty.

RIP a decent franchise

how do you work that one out? Just because you obviously dont like it doesnt mean Im going to follow you.

I think it was a last gasp effort to try and "tie" this film in with the others, it seem ill conceived, poorly executed and actually didn't make too much sense!

*********A coupe of spoilers, beware ***********

I would have to agree here mate, although the original Predator film was the best the second one was pretty good too.

Did anyone else who watched notice how many scenes where very similar to scenes in Aliens, the woman driving the APC mirrored Ripley driving into the colony complex to rescue the marines.

The little girl calling the step mother "mummy" at the end and asking about "if all the monster have gone"

There were just so many scenes like this not to forget AVPR's very own nuke it from orbit scene!!!!

spot on! exactly what i thought, that monsters bit and the mommy was laughable lol. although they ripped the music from both predtor and aliens a liked that, and yeah the apc was direct rip, was blatantly just a " lets take well liked scenes from the other films and modernise them"

overall though it was a decent popcorn movie, some ppl on here expect far to much from this type of film, you need to wake up.

This film was crap, what is up with the predator doing a strip show in the final fight scence with the predalien, that was sooooo gay. Waste of money imo.

Because if you know the fluff, the Predators are honourable warriors who live to fight and die honourably. The predator knew he was going to die and chose to strip himself of all armour in order to fight as pure and as natural as he was able, thus dying as honourably as possible.

I went to see this Friday with some friends.

Admittedly, we were slightly drunk, and it was the late showing (12:10am), but I found myself thinking "what is going on?" and "who are these people?"

Terrible film. Great action and gore, but the story sucked giant egg.

4/10.
