Ok guys I just got back from watching this... I must admit after all the reviews i've seen I was expecting some ****-fest full of appallling acting and little/no decent action. WTF are you guys on, the film rocks!
The first 10 minutes was awesome, very well done, with the glimpse of the aliens breaking loose and the predators homeworld. I was even entertained through the "ooman" parts where you got to see the fit-arsed blonde try and seduce the pizza boy. Oh God her arse was probably the finest I have seen in a long time... *touches self*
Ahem anyway back to the main nitty gritty... the special effects weren't too bad, and the scale of it was much larger than I was expecting... some people made it sound like it was all based around a house and three rooms, but what I saw did a decent portrayal of a town getting royally screwed.
The aliens were more than passable, suitably menacing, and the Predator was done as well as any of the first two films... I though they did pretty bloomin well there. It was as a predator should be, hard as nails and they certainly didn't skimp out with giving a 'Preds-eye-view' of the action, you got a great sense of the tech he was using and how he fought. Pretty canonical if you ask me in that regard. The predalien was the weakest aspect of the lot in that respect but meh, I could live with it without too much trouble.
Also I kept seeing people posting to mewl "It was too dark, you couldn't see anything". Well i'm no Carl Zeiss lense but I didn't have any trouble making out the action... did you expect the sewers to be floodlit or have strategically placed chandeliers lighting up the place? It was dark yes, but that was te ambience and I for one didn't have any trouble with keeping tabs on what was going on.
Another thing I really appreciated was the "I don't care if they're woman, child, pregnant, infirm... they will get killed" style approach. Too many films wuss out on aspects like this, and what we got was an alien literally going into a hospital maternity ward and working its way down a line of expectant mothers. The scene where the docor is looking at the monitors as they all start to flatline was awesome, and really gave a sense that no punches were being pulled. The way they also weren't afraid to have any member of the main cast killed unexpectedly was also a welcome change... and really made me feel like it was pure chaos, all hell breaking loose.
So on to the main actors... ok they aren't going to win any oscar nominations, but they also weren't anywhere close to being as "teen emo" as I was expecting them to be. It felt like you were following a desperate bunch of fleeing teens, not some Rambo-esque bunch of invulnerable cocky ****'s who were wise-cracking every three minutes with a big grin on their face. They did the job adequately.
Yes there were some plot holes best left ignored but lets face it, this film is not the type that you go to watch expecting an intricately woven masterpiece, the film is designed to give an illusion of aliens eating people while being stalked by some badass dreadlocked alien from the planet psychosis2. Which again, it did.
All in all I really liked this film... and I consider myself a pretty harsh critic most of the time. I would give this film a genuine 7/10, hell maybe even a close 7.5/10, and i'll watch it again when it comes out in Hi-Def.
