Hi all,

In the US next week and I intend to come back with some form of shiny new laptop. My mind is stuck between the two above.

The Alienware is still a fat ******* but I've read quite a lot about the MSI getting very hot due to it being too thin for proper air flow, a fairly unresponsive track pad and a short battery life.

Someone please make my life decisions for me!

that is a hard choice. I havent seen the gs70 but I do like the look of it.

I had a play with a AW 14 but sent it back as I got the 1366x768 model (cheap) but the screen was so bad I couldnt put up with it. The 1080p model is IPS, so if you get one make sure you get that screen upgrade.

Other points:

Looks fantastic, I didn't think I would like it but actually prefer to the old design
Solid build quality, it was built like a tank.
great keyboard with good typing response and no missed key strokes
nice speakers

Down sides were it was heavy for a 14" and man does it get noisy

Tough choice. The Alienware 14 is probably too big, hot, and expensive for what it is. Also, AW is using new chassis, which comes with various risks, and its smaller models had hinge issues in previous years. On the other hand, Dell's warranty is better than that of any MSI reseller I have seen, and I expect the AW to have better build quality than the GS70.
