Hi Guys,

Been a very long time since I was last on, but what with the purchase f my first gaming laptop just around the corner, I'm sure i'll start hanging about more.

I hav a question that i need help with, as its doing my head in:

FHD or QHD?

Basically, I'm going for the new Alienware 13, 16GB RAM, 256GB PCI-e SSD & Nvidia's 1060, however, I'm still up in arms about which panel to go for.

From what i've seen, there seems to be mixed reports when it comes to gaming on QHD panels, and whist I'm not going to be gaming constantly, i do really want to get into it, which will more than likely turn in to all the time.

So, what's your thoughts?

Apart from gaming, the laptop will be used for general day to day browsing, word processing etc.

Lastly, i was looking at the Alienware 15 with the GTX 1070 & UHD display, however, its coming in way over budget, but would be interested to see what your thoughts on that would be?

Thanks in advanced,

Darren

Hi,

I can't help you with your Alienware 13 question, but can help with Alienware 15. I have an Alienware 15 with a 980M graphics card and the display is UHD. I can definitely say that, without question, it is one of the best displays I have ever seen.

I was on the hunt for a good gaming laptop for a while but have been very fussy because I have only ever used Apple laptops and have gotten very used to their screens. I wanted something that was close enough to a Retina display because I love the glossiness and richness of colour. It was frustrating to see laptops with good specs but not-so-good displays.

I got very lucky with my Alienware because I saw it on the Outlet, at a very low price. When I received it and turned it on, I was pretty much blown away. In my opinion, the screen is better and more richer than a Retina display. It's fantastic for gaming and I can't really describe it as anything other than perfect. I bought Witcher 3 during the current Steam sales and it looks totally stunning. It's 300 nits and is very bright and easy to use during the day as well.

I can't really advise you on whether to buy an Alienware 13 or 15 because it depends on your own needs of course. My laptop is pretty damn heavy, so if weight is important to you, then avoid the Alienware 15. Too chunky and heavy. But if it doesn't matter, then definitely go for it. It's solidly built and the newer Alienware 15 looks even better than mine.

I'd give you this bit of very useful advice, however: regularly check the Alienware Outlet and see what's there. Some laptops may have been returned, but others are simply people who have put in an order and may have cancelled it afterwards. My Alienware 15 was, for sure, brand new.
