just dl Warhammer does the laptop automatically switch to the gtx when playing a game or do you have to switch it manually ?

If you have switchable graphics installed and correctly setup yes it will. Check it by right clicking on your desktop and choose switchable graphics, or sometimes its located in control panel for your graphic card depending on model or brand.
You can also make a profile and add Warhammer to use discrete graphic card.

well playing on 4k settings on 17". the menu's are minute what is the best setting to use 1920x1080?

You can increase scaling
head to Settings > System > Display > Change the size of text, apps and other items ....
You can play around with percentage and choose whats good for you as its a personal choice.
This way games and videos will still play at 4k while desktop menus and programs menu would be scaled up.

Tried that in settings game menu still comes out small. Am starting game in 1080p settings then once I've gone into the game have changed display to 4K

Oh if its in game menu you are referring to then some games have in game HUD scaling.
