So today i pulled the back off my alienware m17x r3 (2011) and threw in an old 2.5" drive, hooked it up put a flash drive in with win10 on it and hit install.
maybe 10-15 minutes later the laptop was working quite well running win10 and the drivers it found for my laptop. it connected to the internet via lan and then via wireless. I have a killer network card not sure if that was installed as i did not want to tempt fate and mess everything up.
Both graphic cards were found and visible in device manager, however i am pretty sure only the intel onboard graphics were available for me to use i was NOT able to switch graphics and get my amd hd6990 card working although device manager reported it was working correctly. Then discovered my fn keys were not working so installed the alienware applications for win7 that do the fn keys and light and got all that working.
Only game i play is eve online and got all that running
Overall i am fairly happy with the result, would have been better if the Amd card was switchable maybe in time a fix will come for that.
Now i just have to decide if i upgrade the ssd drive with all my stuff on it. Upgraded my main pc last night and got all that running just need to do a clean install on that now
