I didnt see a laptop forum so i posted in here..

Well we have just moved in with my GF's parents down in Nottingham, so with her mum, dad, 3 sisters, brother, their 2 cats, their dog, our 2 cats and 5 kittens.....

Ive been told there isnt room for my gaming rig :(

so after some thought i persuaded her to give me budget to buy a laptop

I had some choices i will list them below :

The Rock Xtreme 770
The Dell XPS M1710
The Alienware Area-51 m9750

After thinking about the choices i obviously thought i want some really good gaming on this machine, i checked out the direct x 10 mobile cards, and the "Rocks xtreme 770" has a m8700 GPU, looking into it it was quite a bit less powerfull than a dx9 7950gtx, and it looks pretty basic.

Now seeing what alienware had to offer me a week ago which was the "m9700" or the pricey "mALX" i swayed towrds the "Dell XPS m1710" , i loved the look of it, the lights, the colour and the 7950 gtx seemed very powerful, even tho a m8800 maybe coming out soon i cant se it until atleast christmas, and then the laptop manufactuers have to add them to there systems.

I went processed an order and was quite excited, 2 days later the order hadnt gone through yet. I did more research and then BAM !

Alienware had just announced the "Area-51 m9750" was avalible to order, i decided this was the one for me and i have gone ahead and ordered it.

Although i will be sad to see my AMDx2 4200 and GF 7900 GS 512mb rig go, i am pretty excited and although a high power m8800 maybe on the horizon late this year / early next im pretty sure this will hold its own for quite a while.

Ill be sure to post lots of pictures when i get it from the huuuuge boxes to the pretty small details. This is my 1st Alienware as i normally build my own rigs.

Thats is one great gaming laptop! I think you made the right choice. Pics are welcome!

What was the price?

heh dont faint.... £2400, not bad with the extras i had on, £100 mp3 player, £100 Headphones ect

Damn! But then again for the specs its still good. Too bad they dont have any decent mid ranged gaming laptops for an affordable price.

Don't waste such a stupid amount on a laptop IMO. I have seen many people on here who say that buying an Alienware/Other expensive (£1.5K+) laptop has been the worst money spent ever.

I would take a look at one of the Dell Inspiron/XPS's, they range from £700 to £1300 for a decent enough gaming laptop.

Don't consider that Alienware overpriced rubbish.

Sorry to have to tell you this mate, but the Dell M1710 is being replaced in the next few weeks with a model which is rumored to have a 8800GTX/Ultra.

o right ok, where did you hear that ? a lot of people ive spoken too think its some way off, hence why "rock" have just launched there 8700m, in a statment from them they said it isnt anytime soon, also surely dell wouldnt jump right into a 8880 gtx/ultra ? it doesnt make buissness sense.

whats your soruce if credable i might cancel then

Thats complete rubbish....Q4 07 or Q1 08 is the earliest you will see that.

And thats only if they overcome the power/heat problems. And a mobile G80 GTX wont be as powerful as the desktop card.

Stick with the 7950, its much faster than the stripped down DX10 card.

Oh really? Read the first post of this thread.

This may seem a little dubious, but believe me it is possible. When Dell released the XPS Gen 2 laptop, it was the first to use a mobile 6800 Ultra. This came as a great surprise as many people didn't expect to see a mobile 6800 Ultra for many months. They've done it before, they could do it again.

isnt the 1st post, like...

my brothers cousin who has a child raised by cats who once were owned by a guy named bill who worked for dell and saw dell make a laptop with 7 x 8800m graphics cards and bill said there coming out sooooooon.

If you read the other posts pretty much every one else comes to the conclusion that it isnt happening anytime soon.

besides even if bills story came true in a months time 2 x 7950 gtx's VS 1 x 8800m isnt going to be that much slower any way.

and going on the direct x 10 performance of some of the titles coming forward there a long way off, by which time the 8800 will be super seeded.

Your not actually paying much for a brand name. Since dell bought Alienware the prices are virutally identical at least for desktops.

Surely you could have put that money towards a house deposit ;) You could just buy an xbox 360 for gaming on rather than wasting 2k on a laptop! lol.

yes but you cant play wow or warhammer online on an xbox , i know i dont need a high spec to play wow, but id like to run war maxed, also dell dont do a sli model, or i may have bought from them

War isn't gonna be out for ages though, beta has only just started, and the game may end up being crap anyway. By the time it goes gold that laptop will be much cheaper.

The Dell XPS is much cheaper and almost the same spec. Sli is crap, not worth spending all that money on, and war certainly won't need it, mmorpgs commonly have their graphics toned down for release due to lag, just like everquest 2 did. The 2.33Ghz cpu costs over £250 more than the 2Ghz, complete waste of money and raid 0 just doubles your risk of losing all your data while offering no game performance improvements and increasing access time.

Dell XPS M1710 £1,399

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 Processor 2.0GHz
160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
512MB DDR3 nVidia® GeForce™ Go 7950 GTX
Windows Vista™ Home Premium
8X DVD+RW

Its a lot of money... but 7950GTX Mobile SLI (can't imagine how hot thats gonna run) is extremely powerful for DX9 stuff... its an expensive replacement for a desktop machine... but good money for a laptop that powerful.

Saw this and my initial thought was "nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!"

Alienware with 1 year warranty!!

Hate to knock your new purchase and i know they look amazing but are you aware alienware make no attempt to help you after the warranty runs out and as soon as this laptop is out of date (ie newer shape laptop comes out of that type)they discontinue any sort of parts support unless under warranty for the older generations and insist theres nothing they can do to help?

I suspect it'll more than likely break due to poor build quality and overheating issues (ending up being motherboard issues which are impossible to source) in 1 year and 1 month and you'll be selling it as spares or repairs on ebay for <£400

I'm not a doomsday merchant and i'm speaking from experience and the unbelievable amount of "spares or repairs alienware" that come up constantly on a well known auction site suggest i'm a long way from alone. I'd make use of the distance sellers act and consider it a lucky escape if i was you!

Why not just get a media centre to tuck behind the sofa and mount a massive lcd on your wall? It'd be a much faster system as laptops can't really compare with desktops, It'd take up very little room, it'd last years, be more eye catching, and wouldn't make you regret it bigtime down the line. Also keep in mind these gaming laptops are not the sort of thing you can really keep on your lap because of the heat generated unless you plonk them on a bit of wood so eventually end up sat at a desk which defeats the whole purpose of space saving.

Rant over!! :D
