Hi.

I'm thinking about getting one of these laptops and I have a few questions that I could not get answered today on the phone to Alienware.

How upgradable are these systems ? By upgradable I mean upgrade the motherboard when Intel release a new cpu for example.

Will I be able to upgrade the gpu to nVidia's 680m (if one becomes available) ?

Can I have one built that does not come with Winblows ?

Cheers for your time guys :)

They will release a bios flash if the new cpu's are the same family (like the recent sandybridge update), you wont be able to change motherboards.

You might be able to upgrade graphics, its possible with alienware, just depends.

You can I suppose, better to call them.

ive got an r3, you can change the graphics as currently the format is mxm 3.0b i think, if this stays the same with the new refresh, then its just a case of swapping the gfx card. mxm is a format just like pci e 2.0. regarding ivy, not sure but i think its using the same mobile socket but dont quote me. and nah you cant rly get them without windows, but what you can do is format the drive. you wont lose any warrenty really, if you modify a part its just that part they cannot replace.

Thanks guys...

garyfl: Do you like it ? Any problems ?

Do you think it might be an idea to wait for the next gen gfx cards to come out ? I'm hearing nVidia are releasing the mobile versions first you see...

Edit: Is there actually anywhere you can get these laptops from or do you have to get one through Alienware/Dell ? The reason I ask is because I found it hard to talk to someone who is English on the phone today. No one could answer my questions as they could not understand me. Plus if it went **** up I could just pop it down to the place I bought it from :)

i have had mine from new for about 1 month now and its awesome, i cannot fault it. No probelms at all no bloatware either. very nice machine.

its a loverly machine, im in awe, i told myself not to play with it as i want an m18x and i want it to be pristine but i couldntt help myself, ive fresh installed windows and put in my ssd. boots in under 10 secs with an m4

i still have to get an ssd for mine, i thought dell's prices were too expensive so i opted to get the ati radeon hd6990m card rather than a drive

That's good to know, thanks ! I was thinking about getting one from the States. I have a friend over there and when you look at the price difference it's quite a lot. Get it shipped over and bobs ya uncle :)
