Alienware Refunded Help me build new x79 system

probably best to ask someone like stulid about the motherboards + cooler tbh. its really not an area i know much about for the 2011 socket.

How do i contact stulid?

im intrested in sorting this, crazy idea now of going 64 gb ram!

only because adobe can allocate 3gb per thread and on a 12 thread cpu thats 36 gb but with back ground process allocated 3gb there would only be 33gb available! so would have to go down to 2gb per thread and only use 24gb?

huge price difference but might be worth it?

Just a quick heads up:

I have vegas 11 pro thats meant to be gpu accelrated but doesnt work

It does work, but not with your cards in SLi. make yourself a profile to run the 2 cards seperately in Sony Vegas and you should get GPU acceleration.

I do get gpu accelaration but its slower than CPU alone, seriously dont go there its a saw point lol

sony refunded me purchase price as a fast 6 core cpu is quicker than gpu!

Sounds like you got Vegas free then? that not a partial win?

As far as motherboards go for OC'ing its got to be the Rampage IV. The thing is a beast!
Again no firewire but you could get a PCI-e card for it.

Ive been looking at the Corsair Obsidian 800D it has a firewire built into the front pannel! going to build a beast!

that will still need a motherboard that has a firewire cable on it, but it will need one that isnt on the back panel, like the front panel USB slots on motherboards

also, if your planning on air cooling the GPUs then the 800D really isnt the case i'd go for. its fantastic for watercooling, but not great with air (this is why i recommended the fortress, its the best air cooled case out there)

I will be using water cooling for the CPU something like H100 corsair?
im new to this but love the h60 on my other rig

sorry, i should have been a bit clearer. the silverstone fortress 2 (and raven) are fine with any water coolers that have a 120mm radiator. anything bigger than that and its a bit useless. so, it can cope with anything up to the corsair H80, antec 920, OcUK V6 and the EK H3O 120, the first two being like the H60 you already own requiring no maintenance or setup, the latter two being custom loop watercooling which need to be put together and filled up.

if you are going to air cool the graphics cards i would recommend going with the fortress and the corsair H80 simply because the antec 920 is currently not compatible with socket 2011. if you are going to watercool the graphics cards some time in the future then go with the 800D because the fortress is useless with radiators big enough for cooling two 580s

of course, if you prefer the looks of the 800D over the fortress then go for it. i would rather you had a £200 case that you love the looks of but was a bit warm inside than a £200 case you didnt like the looks of that was cooler inside

The Gpu will be air cooled, as i have said before this is an editing work station first and a Gaming rig second! now i would like to keep the cpu cool as it will run at 100% load for hours at a time when rendering.

I would like the cpu to be at 4.5 to 5.0 stable and need the cooling to support this.

I am not intrested in any custom water cooling setup and will need something that just bolts in and no need to assemble

in that case i'll put forward the corsair H80 + fortress 2 recommendation, unless stulid would recommend something different

cant really go wrong with what you have been quoted so far mate
personally i would wait to see when the rampage 4 x79 mobo is coming and get that, but thats just me for that kind of money id want maximum overclock and stablity
