Apologies in advance for any spelling errors i am entering this on my phone, no internet yet due to moving home.
Anyway am after a lappy to play wow etc and saw an alienware mx17 model next to the display description it had this

Display : 17in WideXGA+ 1440 x 900 - Beyond HD (900p) - Dual CCFL

What does all that mean?
I would like to know also what is the best laptop graphic card to lookout for? 555 540 etc

Many thanks

It just means the type of screen and ress

For your other question, a M11x with a C2D and a GT335m will play WoW and Rift at very high'ish well (shadows is what slows everything down), and the GT525m is about the same in most games as the 335m, so theres a start for you :), but WoW does like more powerful CPU's rather then GPU's

I think the 1 your talking about as a ATI 5 series in it, also have a look at Inspirons 15R's, not bad for the price difference

Breaking this down:
17in WideXGA+ 1440 x 900 Resolution Details, WideXGA+ is the technical name for that res, if you want to know more check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphic_display_resolutions
Beyond HD (900p) Marketing bumf, again pointing out its a x900 screen which is beyond HD 720p
Dual CCFL Backlight type, dual CCFL bulb

The best laptop GPU (non workstation ie Quadro/FireGL) out right now is the GTX580m, followed closely but ATIs 6990 (at a much lower price).

Following this it's in this order IIRC, getting weaker as we go down (colour coded for brand).
GTX 485m/6970m
GTX 560m
5870m/6870m
GTX460m
GTX285m

4870m/GTX280m
4850m
GTX260m

There are a couple of other cards as well, but these are the most common as far as I'm aware for the Alienware's as of recent.

If they don't say on the outlet what GPU it has, I wouldn't order it until I'd rang them, given them the ID code from the outlet (keep it in your cart while you do) and check, as it could be any of a number of GPUs, it's pretty poor show they haven't listed it.

No problem, good luck getting your ideal laptop.

Just as a speed reference, a 5870m in a laptop is about the same speed as a desktop 5770/4870 minus a few percent. The 6970m is about the same speed as a desktop 6850 (in other words about half as fast again, perhaps a bit more, compared to the 5870m).

My main system is an i5 running at 4.4 ghz it has an ati 5770 vapor x card all in a haf x case, unfortunatly i have no where to plonk it all in our new home.

That was the basic default m17x dell options the only thing i changed was the display too the 1920x1080
I7 , 6gig ram all standard part from display
