align div @ bottom of page?

I want to align a div at the bottom of the page so its like a footer. No matter what i try it just wont have it at all... I even gave up with that and just tried to get it to expand the background image to the bottom of the page so it fills the gap but it wont do that either.

the little black bar going accross is the footer but as you can see its not at the bottom and wont repeat to the bottom...

Anybody have any ideas?

can you not use absolute positioning in your css?

E.g.

 position:absolute;
 bottom:0;

did you try #footer {clear: both} in your css?
