Building a rig for a friend and wanted to check this is all compatable?

The computer will not be used dominantly for gaming more for design work but mainly 3ds max.

Asus M4A87TD Evo AMD 870 (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599)

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5670 512MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502HJ)

Coolermaster Elite 335 Case - Black

Samsung TS-H353B 16x DVD-ROM SATA (Black) - OEM

Logitech S96 PS/2 Optical Wheel Mouse Black - OEM (953688-1600)

Microsoft Black PS/2 Keyboard (Q95-00086)

Total Price: £791.83 inc postage.

Few concerns:

1) is it all compatable? i am not sure what mobo to use and if the PSU is enough power

2) how overclockable are the new 6 core amd chips?

3) what kindof performance should i expect to see using that GPU in the list?

Can anyone do better for the price but alsowhat can people make with a £700 budget?

many thanks.

1. Check the asus website to see if the CPU is on the motheboard support list

2. I think this depends on the mobo and cpu cooler (aftermarket one) that is used

3.That gpu is decent.

Also if your not going to overclock then just find a cheaper mobo andput the money towards a 5770

ocuk currently have a decent deal on some hyper x but im not sure if its ddr3. see if thats cheaper than the viper

ok, i have been out of the loop for a while so is there some issues with the new AMD processors?

not all motherboards support them but i think the 800 chipset should without a bios update (let someone else confirm this)

you could also look at the phenom 925 and oc it to 3.2-3-6 but then again your doing 3d max so the extra should benefit you

One of my mates bought the Asus M4A87TD Evo and the SB850 southbridge it has seems to have issues with some of the newer Samsung F3 hard drives! This is a Samsung issue it seems and does not seem to be the fault of Asus or AMD.

Here is an article about the problem:

http://www.overclock3d.net/news/sto..._s_don_t_like_the_new_amd_sb850_southbridge/1

Here is a link to the firmware patch for the hard drive:

The Asus M4A87TD Evo seems a very nice motherboard though.

Edit!!

The motherboard should work fine with the new six core Phenom II processors according to Asus:

http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/m4_6cores/

Anyway you could always ask OcUK if the motherboard is fine and they may even be able to update the BIOS if required.
