All files in my downloads folder have disappeared.

Can anyone think of a possible reason for this? It appears that all the files in my download file have disappeared for no apparent reason?

Hidden files are viewable, no viruses, everything else seems to be normal and I haven't made any changes to anything. Also, they are not in the recycle bin

I am running Windows 8 on a 500GB Samsung 840 SSD.

try an undelete program like recuva

Did you change the default downloads folder when you installed windows? I have noticed before that when I did this and then ran windows update it reset it back to the default location and had to change it again.

Ccleaner or some other drive cleanup utility has emptied the downloads folder is all that comes to mind.

If downloads are on a different drive to your ssd go to administrative tools, computer management then disk management. you disk will be there as a foreign drive just sync it it will work
