Thinking of giving VR a go. Been recommended the Quest 2.

My question is, are all VR games compatible with all VR hardware?

No.

Quest has its own library of games and its own store. Out-of-the-box, it offers a console-like standalone experience.

Quest can also run PC VR titles, but they must be compatible with Oculus Rift. Some aren't (e.g. I tried to play the Gnomes & Goblins preview last night, but it doesn't worth with Oculus controllers). However, the vast majority of PC VR titles will be fine.

To run PC VR titles, you have two options; you can use "Oculus Link" by installing Oculus's software and running a USB 3.0 cable between your headset and your PC, or you can use an Oculus Quest app called "Virtual Desktop" to stream VR games to your headset over WiFi.

The Quest 2 will actually work with more VR titles than most other headsets.

The main reason is the Oculus Touch controllers layout and functionality has remained the same (with slight tweaks) across all Oculus headsets, so most games are designed to support them. Other headsets like the Valve Index have more issues as not all VR titles fully support their advanced controllers.

This will actually start to become more common - OpenXR is starting to be implemented in earnest and makes the games hardware agnostic.

You’ll still get store exclusives, but the point is that games will be able to run using the openXR runtimes on steamvr headsets, wmr headsets, oculus headsets without any specific work from the developers. If companies decide to artificially limit games to their headsets (cough, oculus, cough) then they can continue to do so, but you should see games that “just work” across all major VR platforms.
