All games run fine, except Subnautica that gives in a BSOD in 8 mins

Weird one but I guess my PC isn't completely stable or driver issue? The BSOD happened on previous Nvidia drivers about 6 weeks old and I've just updated to current 576.88 so about to do another crash test.

The BSOD was kmode exception not handled.

ok so I upgraded to Windows 11 rather than fresh install but that was a while ago and I've played a load of TLOU1/2 without any BSOD.

Due to Hardware Unboxed or Gamers Nexus discovering a Windows 11 install bug it's recommended to do a fresh install if moving to a different number of CPU cores so for that reason I was holding off a fresh install until I get an 8 core CPU. I guess I could get a 9700X then fresh install Win 11 but god Subnautica better but worth it and yeah I guess having a stable system is also good :)

PC is running stock
Motherboard: Asus TUF Gaming B650 Plus Wifi - BIOS 3057 (I could update this. 3263 changelog: '2.Enhanced system performance and stability.' but does it stop a 7 year old game from BSODing?)
RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO 32GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30 - Mark Corrigan: No! No, I don't know what your inexpressible criteria are. Why don't you tell me the secret ******* formula?

My other plan was to build 3 PCs with 3 different hardware combinations and keep the one that doesn't BSOD. PCs eh?!

If you're running EXPO, then the first thing I'd do is turn that off.

From what I can gather, kmode exception is most likely to be driver related,

...of which the recent nvidia drivers (since the 5000 cards) don't have a good reputation.

I'd remove/uninstall any software that could conflict with the proper operation of the drivers too, like motherboard software and monitoring software.

Does the problem always happen in exactly 8 minutes? If so, does it relate to a specific save game/area in the game? If that is the case, is there anything special about that area?

Do you have Windows security features like Core Isolation turned on?

Thanks will do. My PC is generally pretty stable so it was weird to get a BSOD in this one game.

I use GPU-Z for monitoring and Argus Monitor for fan control and temps. I don't think either use any overlays but I'll check that. I'm usually on the ball with what software I allow to be installed on my machine. I'm not completely against a fresh install but just know it takes a few hours to get everything back to how it was, most things are backed up but best to do a full reinstall and restore configs.

I'd just started the game for the first time so that's 8 mins minus the time it took me to change settings and binds so the actual game was going for about 2 mins and took my first swim when the BSOD happened.

I'll check Windows core isolation - should this be on or off for a gaming PC?

Re: EXPO - I'll confirm but I don't think my PC posts when it's enabled but works fine when the timings are entered manually :) If anyone can recommend RAM that Just Works for this motherboard I'd jump on it and sell this crap.

I keep core isolation off for gaming. Probably not the safest, but I'm a responsible adult these days (debatably).

I'd start with drivers - 566.36 is the still the go to for stability. If it's the only game crashing, I wouldn't bother with a Windows reinstall.

Back in the game for 10 mins and so far no BSOD.

Core isolation:
mem integrity on
kernel: off
Local sec auth protection: on
MS vulnerable driver blocklist: off

RAM speed changed from 6000 to 5600MHz

As stated upgraded to latest nvidia driver. If I don't get any more BSOD I'll try the RAM at 6000MHz again.

I was becoming more interesting in getting a 9700X and doing a fresh install just to move to 8 cores and get it out the way as I expect I'll be on AM5 for while and 9800X3D is a bit overkill for me right now.

Are you saying that you're entering timings and a manual frequency, with EXPO disabled?

Did you also change the memory voltage?

Yeah every time I choose EXPO I'll leave it ages but it appears to not be doing anything, I know training can take a while sometimes and it's slow to boot (I leave it on 24/7 and rarely restart) but after 15 mins it's still not posted with EXPO enabled and I read people enter the first few timings manually which works for me. Yeah voltage manually set to v1.35.

One of the issues is with every BIOS update things get moved around and names of things changed which makes finding guides on this more difficult. Also I don't care about RAM and timings and just want it to post and never bother me again.

Have you tried XMP?

I'd hope that your changes are enough, especially with the right memory volts, but the problem with manual config is that EXPO/XMP doesn't only change the memory settings, it also prepares in other ways, so there's a possibility that your build is unstable and some games would be more memory intensive than others.

ok thanks, I've flashed to the latest BIOS, set a few things but mostly defaults and this time just EXPO and so far it's actually posted woop, FSB: DRAM 1:30, 30-38-38-96-146 so says CPUZ, I assume that's good :) that looks like EXPO to me.

Since it's AMD I thought it was all about the EXPO rather than XMP plus my RAM box has EXPO stickers on it, probably covering up XMP :p I've had this machine 2 years maybe it's stable now.. I'll try some apparently really taxing game Subnautica over the weekend to test.

FSB: DRAM 1:30 is bad it turns out, see what I mean?! whhhyyy I'll take a look later.

It should be 1:1 or 1:2 ?

I bought my RAM because it was on the Asus QVL for my motherboard, then there was some issues and fixes with BIOS updates and they removed a load of RAM from the QVL including my RAM :) There is only 6 RAM kits on it lol all of which stick up with pointless head spreaders and RGB. This is why I hate RAM.

edit: Ok maybe that was last night and I wasn't searching properly, there's a few but not sure mines there anymore, timings don't show https://www.asus.com/uk/motherboard...l_memory?model2Name=TUF-GAMING-B650-PLUS-WIFI

I may get some RAM from that list and sell this stuff. Kingston FURY Beast 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory KF560C30BBEK2-32 closest normal RAM, not too tall, no RGB, 14 good reviews I can see. also maybe not, play the game and not worry about it.
