looking for a good multifunction printer, will only be used a few times a week at the most, sometimes not even that much! lol

£60 max

was looking at a canon mp240

found the below info, which has put me off a bit!

Canon and Epson printers both regularly include a cleaning cycle which is invoked when the printer has not been used for a few days at a time, which invariably uses a lot of ink - sometimes up to a quarter of the volume of a cartridge can disappear over its working life cleaning the nozzles. HP and Lexmark avoid this problem by making the printing head part of the cartridge which thus gets replaced every time you change it

Havent really noticed this with my Canon Pixma MP520, certainly not a quarter of the cartridge, thats seems to be way off the mark! The cartridges last a good while and relatively cheap too, Ive not printed stuff for over a month before and not noticed an excessive cleaning cycle.

edit:

justnoticed youre looking at the MP240: I think this uses a combined colour cartridge.
If you can stretch to the higher end model which uses separate colour ink cartridges it will be cheaper to run in the long term as you can change each separate colour as you run out.

got a hp - alright, software is bloated, scanner is a bit carp, drivers a nightmare (can't print over a network very easily..just stalls). cartridge costs fairly high, as in it costs less to buy the printer again instead of a full set of inks, but that is often the case....

for someone in your position it would do the job - ours bought to replace a similiar hp bought by the missus, cost was the main factor as it was sub £20 for an all-in-one!

Every all in one goes through cleaning cycle every day. There is a simple cure to it. Switch off when not in use and turn on once a week so it cleans itself. Problem solved. Also, most cartridges included with printers these days are actually mini "demo" versions, about half of the capacity. The cheapest all-in-ones (in terms of ink) by far are Brother's. Older models, like DPC135, are very capable, very cheap and you can find good quality third party inks for small change all over the net. New ones use chipped cartridges which are best avoided if possible. Brothers are brilliant all in one printers, unfortunately they usually have weak scanners. They are not necessarily bad, but not a patch on Canon scanners for example.

These days chipped cartiridges arnet too much of a hassle. There are 3rd party chipped versions of the canon cartridges for example, i usually get my inks off the bay, much cheaper and they work just fine.

I use the Canon Pixma mx310. Picked it up for around £50 delivered six months ago.
Does everything I need it to do. Print/fax/copy/scan. The software suite is very good and easy to use. I actually bring work home to scan to pdf as it is better than my work scanner.

I would highly recommend any product from the Canon range.
