Hi,

I have a budget of approx £75 for an all-in one printer (without fax). I could up this a bit for a better printer.
This will be my first printer and will connect to my desktop PC in the same room. I would like the option to print up to A4 size colour prints.
If I can get lab photo quailty, that would be great. What would be the minimum dpi?

Can I have some suggestions on which brand and model one I should consider please?
The ink (original) prices is something that will need to be considered as an on-going cost.

Thanks.

Canon. Get one with seperate ink tanks for each colour.

Also consider HP. They are probably more reliable than Canon. Also HP cartridges include a new printhead, so they cost more to run, but any printhead problems are easily solved.

I would avoid Epson. Good print quality (better than HP) but they seem to be more susceptible to print head problems.

Thanks Tomsk.

I had initially considered Epson DX8450 but taken your advice and I just had a look at the Canon Pixma MP520.

Any ideas what this is like?

Cheers.

Got myself a Epson DX8450 when they were on offer for £59 and its prety good - before this i had a canon mp210 and was constantly replacing the ink

Hi Thebug,

I think I can still get the Epson DX8450 for about £60 and have been told the 'original' ink is not very expensive. Also, this printer has a higher resolution that others.

Are you happy with the colour prints eg. 6x4?
Have you tried to print a photo in A4? if so, what's it like?

Cheers.

Hi, Prints i have done on 6x4 have been very good but thats on epson paper, not tried A4 (dont want to use all my ink)

And as for ink the big high street shops do original sets of 4 for £24.99, or theres compatibles for about £8 a set.

I think the scanner is a better resoloution than others for the same price.

Hi,

I will still consider the Epson because a friend has one too and he thinks its very good, especially at that price.

Do the compatible inks cause any problems with the printer head or print quality or should I stick to the orginals?

Thanks.

Hi,

A quick (and late) update, I purchased the Epson DX8450 printer and will be setting it up very soon.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

Note for Epson Users.

Run the printer at least twice a week to clean the heads. Epsons are Excellent printers with superb prices on ink replacements but they are prone to getting clogged heads. You can buy a de clogging kit but if you are aware before hand you won't need it. It's only from not using it & the ink drying up so run it regularly giving it a good clean through & they'll be sound.
