All Linux installs black screen?

I'm using ubuntu 24.04.2 but the issue is the same in all Linux flavours I have tried have had same issues...as I say I have not tried Linux before so not sure what I'm doing....will have to Google commands for terminal installation process....seems people have stuck with Windows for a reason...
Have you tried to install Windows with the AMD GPU? If it works you know it isn't a hardware issue. If it doesn't you know the GPU is fried. Once you know the hardware is fine we can work on the Linux side of things.

Yeah GPU is fine I was running windows but wiped it due windows 10 going end of support....

I don’t know what anyone else thinks, but as a Linux newbie it seems to me that you’ll be making life difficult for yourself with that old card.

Ubuntu is hard to beat for hardware compatibility and its ability to set itself up automatically. However, the AMD R9 390 ceased receiving support for proprietary drivers as of Ubuntu 16 and transitioned to using the AMD open-source driver. As noted in the Mint link mentioned above, it was suggested to modify the boot command for it to function properly. If you wish to utilise the current AMD proprietary drivers, you'll need to enable the HWE stack on Ubuntu, which also requires using the command line.

A lot of piddling about that you don't normally need to do with Ubuntu.

Hmmm yeah was trying to get some life out of an old pc.... I guess I can look for a cheap 2nd hand card...it's all very old but did play old games ok...so was planning on setting up just for steam big picture for my son.... Maybe Xbox series S or steam deck is sensible thing really but always like to do the more complicated thing...

The only other thing that I can think of is the GPU video BIOS / firmware... Tech Power Up have 3 different versions for the Powercolor R9 390 on their website:
https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios...el=R9+390&interface=&memType=&memSize=&since=

GPU-Z should show which version is currently on the card (in fact I think the card is a dual BIOS with a switch, which should give you a backup if you try updating one).
I have not needed to update a GPU BIOS since the Windows XP days though so I'm not up to date with how to do it.
The Powercolor website seems to have removed the GPU from their support pages, so I don't know if they recommended updating or had the download available at some point.

Ok will check this out, the GPU works fine in windows but never know.... Cheers

Definetly sounds like a driver issue, Radeon driver is being loaded but it doesn't support your aged card funnily enough. You need to disable it and specify the amdgpu.

Few ways to do it, edit the grub menu and set kernel parameters. After a quick Google I found this which will show you how to do it.

----
From GRUB type e to edit parametersearch the line starting with linux...at the end add a space and:

radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1

CTRL+X to close and start

Make it permanent:

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

At the end of the parameter "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT" add a space and these same two options:

radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1

Note that some add also radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1

-----

Or at the black screen use Ctrl + Alt + F1 or F2, F3 etc. Uninstall the Radeon driver and install amdgpu but the above would be easier for you.

Alternatively..

Try PopOS, Ubuntu based but uses a different bootloader so you might get lucky.

Cool, thanks I will test this out!
