All the Fans, none of the Post (or Boot)

Ok I have trawled quite a few forums (including OcUK) for a solution to this problem which is the reason for this post. If this has been resolved before, I apologise for posting again, but I can't find it.

Here it is;

Occasionally, one of my PCs will fail to POST. ALL fans spin up (CPU, GPU, Case and PSU) and the drives get power, but the machine does not POST and there is no reaction from the monitor. I know these symptoms often point to a damaged M/B or PSU or CPU, but like I say this only happens occasionally. There are times when the damn thing springs straight into life .

As you can imagine this is rather annoying. I have one theory that I have been considering, which is that the "Power OK" signal wire is not seated properly and this may be causing the lack of POST but other than that, I am completely lost.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Tests I have carried out so far:-

Removed all RAM - no continuous beep
Removed everything except graphics, M/B power connector and power switch - same deal.

It has done it in the past and I've spent hours trying to get it to boot, then it will boot for weeks first time.

Sounds like a similar situation to mine.Fans working lights comming on drives working but no beeps or posting. Its a conspiricy.
As you have said have had it in the past then left it and worked for a few weeks np then it comes back.

There's a few options. The cpu is very unlikely to be damaged unless you've been severely mistreating it.

mb/psu would be the most likely candidates. However I suggest unplugging the 4/8 pin and 20/24 pin atx cables and looking at the connectors. Over time they can become too spread out and make poor contact with the board, and this can lead to misbehaviour. I found out about this yesterday when I asked why my pc turned off when kicked, but it could easily give the symptoms you're describing. I used a drawing pin and pushed the contacts a little bit closer together, no problems anymore

Thanks Jon

Just as you were posting that I have tried the following:-

Removed the 4 pin extender to leave the M/B with 20 pins - no change.
Reseated every power connector - no change.
Ran the CPU without HSF - absolutely no heat and no cut out after 2-3 mins

So in conclusion, I think a voltage regulator is caput. Dead M/B, sad AAMinistry :p

Taking the heat sink off was brave, but actually quite a good idea for diagnostics. I'm voting dead board as well then, bad luck. Good luck with the rma

Might be my motherboard as well... I suspected OCUK sent me a returned mobo as the packaging inside was all over the place when I got it. should have complained back then but the prospect of having a wicked gaming rig took over.
