All the new CPUs are disappointing

Overall I'm disappointed with the CPUs coming out this year.

The solid work horse i7's are more than capable of dealing with anything that will come out in the next 5 years. There is no need to upgrade if you own an i7, other than the bragging rights.

AMD are making totally distorted claims about AM3+

Sandy bridge is an overclockers nightmare, frying themselves if you fiddle the voltage and performing in a real life situation not a lot better than the previous generation.

This is true for you. Don't assume it's true for everyone.

Interesting assessment. The nonK series SBs are not for overclockers, but the K series appear to be rather friendly to clockers. Provided, of course, people have an understanding of the limits.

SB is faster than the previous generation, is made on a smaller die so will be cheaper to produce and uses less power. Those are significant improvements.

ROFL, we'be had issues with people frying processors every time intel switches to a new node... it will happen until people realise they can't put bare volts into them like the previous node...

How can u say its a bad year for cpu,z.
my i7920 watercooled at 4.3ghz gets blown away by a quiet i7 2600k on air.
there is no way this is a bad move by Intel. ppl moan about wanting a new upgrade tech etc. one comes out and ppl moan.

seriously  I didn't think they were THAT much better.
Might be tempted after all. How much faster have you found them to be?

1 boot up time i can boot up from dead in about 13 seconds.
the bios on this board is great and makes everything seem much faster.
i have gone from a rampage 3 extreme with dual x16 pcie lanes to p8p67 deluxe
with 2x 8pcie lanes. i can still get loads higher scores on air.
fan running quiet and thats @ 4.5 ghz. will go loads higher but u dont need to.
running 200 mhz more with less volts. that is a very good upgrade in my option. on 3dmark 11 im just short of 11k

My 2600k was stupidily easy to overclock to 4.6GHz (temps below 69c @24c room temp). Not sure what's dissapointing about that for those in the market for a new cpu.

It's relative to the people that buy one.

If you have a 5 year old processor then it's great, if you already have an i7 then it won't be massively better!

People shouldn't complain if you already have a good system, just dont buy one! :)

Well, considering how far CPU performance has came on in the last few years, it's not a shock that we're hitting a bit of a wall.

That being said, I paid £180 for my Q9400, I paid £180 (ish) for my i5 2500k. Inflation adjusted I paid less for the i5, yet the thing destroys the old C2Q.

If people are expecting magic, and the new SB/Bulldozer chips to somehow make the last gen of CPU's look like Pentiums 4's, then maybe peoples expectations, rather than reality, is disappointing.
