Im fixing a computer for a friend and i cant get a mouse to work on any of the USB ports. Whenever the computer starts up the light on the mouse lights up and then dies. i have tried two different mouse on the computer and it still wont work, and have tried them on all USB ports front and back.

When i plug them into the ports the computer makes a wee noise like it knows something has been pluged into it.

Any suggestion please!!!

Have you installed the USB driver that came with the mobo?Try the ports with a USB flash and see if it recognizes it.

Yea the drivers should be installed. The problem is that im stuck at the screen to chose which user to log in with as i cannot click on anything!!!

bit of a long shot, but i bet theres a spare USB header on the mobo. try moving the cable from the front USB's from one header to another.

sounds to me like the southbridge might have frazzled. What chipset/southbridge is on there?

also just thought, is there some odd setting in the BIOS that you/your friend may have changed, maybe some kind of USB kill switch (again, highly unlikely, just thinking outside the box here...)

another thought (wow, coming up with ideas whilst typing ... i can multitask me...), tried killing the power at the wall? once the laptop keyboard froze and having tried everything, i thought of this as a last hope, pulled the plug, removed the battery and hey presto.

What graphics card & drivers has he got ?

I had the same problem after installing cat 9.12's on w7 64bit, had to boot into safe mode and roll back the drivers.
9.11 & 10.1 no problems.
