Hi all,

First post, I have a bonus coming from work at the end of the month and have budgeted £700 to spend on upgrading my PC.

I currently have:
AMD Phenom II x4 965
Noctua Cooler (not sure which model but it's a beast)
Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P
6GB (3 x 2GB) of assorted 1066MHz RAM
XFX R9 280X Double Dissipation (not black) Edition
500W PSU (probably needs an upgrade)
1TB HDD
all in a Corsair Spec-03

I planned an upgrade to a i5-4690k with a H80i and a MSI z97 Gaming 5 board. I wanted to be in a position to add a second 280x when I can afford it however I have discovered that my case will not take a second 280x due to the HDD bays being in the way of the second one, so now I think I need to get a new case too (am also thinking that it will allow me space for a bigger AIO water cooler).

So I would like suggestions on what I can do with that budget, am at this point essentially thinking of replacing everything except the GPU and HDD.

Hi and welcome.

Do you know if your Noctua has socket 155/56 fittings?

Its possible you can just keep it and fit it to a new board with some new paste.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM £179.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-SLI Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £92.99
1 x EVGA SuperNova G2 750W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £89.99
1 x Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter (CT256MX100SSD1) £86.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED38G2400HC11CDC01) £65.99
1 x Antec P100 Mid Tower Silenced Computing Case £62.99
Total : £588.53 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Noctua will send you new fittings for free, if needed, as long as the product is still covered by warranty. Even if it isn't, they may send you some anyway, as they tend to be fantastic support-wise.

You could remove the HDD bay from the case, and use one of several methods to place your HDD (optical drive bay is an option, if you have one free, just buy an adaptor. Bungee cord mod. On floor of case, on top of a sponge, tied securely with bungee cord or similar, etc).

So don't bother with a AIO watercooler then, is there a reason for this I thought they were a lot better than just a heatsink and fan?

It all depends on which cooler you have and which AIO you wanted, they are useful for tall RAM dimms which maybe to tall for certain large heatsinks.

Up to you but you already have a cooler so use it and save money to spend on the other bits that actually give a performance boost.

That defo is the cooler you got. Did I give you the Intel fittings with it? Was on an 1156 board...i think that should be 1150 compatible
