Starting to feel my current Asus P5W DH DELUXE & E6600 based system lagging behind and and i'm thinking of treating myself to an upgrade this xmas :D

I already have an antec 900 case but if anyone can recommend a decent (and fairly quiet- I'm trying to keep noise down - difficult with an XFX4890 I know) and not too expensive case that this lot will fit in I would be most grateful:D.

Already have a good PSU i upgraded fairly recently and don't feel I need to upgrade from my 4890 just yet as it still has plenty of oomph so.....

Just in case i've got something glaringly wrong, how does this lot sound?

If it's mainly for gaming and you don't use any applications that use hyperthreading get an i5-2500K instead and put the savings towards a new case or GPU. The Antec Kuhler is a decent closed loop watercooling unit but for a bit more cooling power I'd go for a Thermalright Silver Arrow, especially if you want to push the overclock. The rest looks fine and is compatible. Will be a nice little upgrade from your E6600. As for a quiet case, just bought a Fractal Design Define R3 and it's pretty quiet. Antec have just released the P280 Super Midi Tower Case, which although is quite a bit more expensive gets some good reviews.

what is the make/model of the psu? you may have upgraded it recently but if you went for cheapo high wattage no name then you'll want to replace it with a better quality one.

you must have the older xfx hd4890, i got the newer one which was redesigned, it has a larger fan right in the middle and the heatsink spreads out to each side, anyway im in the same position as you, parts showing their age, already had these helpful fellows on the forum help me with a new build and for the sake of it i will get a new graphics card simply because the 4890 is OLD and buying a newer card will definitely have a noticeable improvement

edit: these same fellows have taught me that buying the best of the best isnt necessary unless its your goal to max stuff out, an i7 might look appealing but ask yourself, do you need it? :) could save a few £££ by getting a cheaper alternative

I upgraded from same board and CPU to what's in my sig... Omg what a difference :D you will b impressed..Boots from cold in about 15 secs.. Easy to overclockers too.. I'd upgrade you gfx next year tho if u game a lot?

But Karateyid...I want it to boot in 4 seconds....:p

Thanks guys, I do mostly game so I suppose i5 2500k is the way to go.

This is the PSU i have - upgraded last year

Antec TruePower New Modular 750W Power Supply

I'll have a look at the cases you mention Shadow_boxer :)

Any thoughts on the MB? Is it a good choice?

Appreciate all the input:D

Ok so now i'm thinking of going with

i5 2600k

corsair force series 3 120GB for OS

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-005-AN

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-094-KS

Asrock z68 extreme4 gen3

WD 1TB 3.5" SATA-III 6Gb/s Caviar Black Hard Drive - 7200rpm 64MB Cache for games and general storage

Fractal Design Define R3 Black Pearl Case

windows 7 pro 64

Not sure if there is a better (faster but simple) way for me to set up the OS/storage drives without going over budget?

Do you mean i5 2500K or i7 2600K ?? You mixed the two together, lol :p

well if you have old sata hard disk/s you wouldn't have to worry about going over budget, if you have to get new drives(current ones ide etc) then would suggest not going for the most expensive ones(the 1tb wd cavier black is £140, there are cheaper 1tb drives.

case wise I'd suggest the silverstone raven 2 or 3 if not keeping your current case.

I understand this but i'm quite intent on getting the SSD for the OS for obvious reasons, and the WD Caviar black seems to have the better performance and cache size than similar priced competitors. I could wait for prices of drives to go down, but then I could be a waiting a long time.....

How is the silverstone Raven at suppressing noise?

I'm currently using an antec 900 and although its nice and cool, i'm a bit sick of having what sounds like a hoover running when i'm watching films :(

if you're using a ssd then you don't need a sata3 hdd, even then the cavier black isn't that much faster than say the samsung to worth the additional cost especially as you're already paying £100+.

do you really need 1tb right now? save some cash and go 500gb, the 1tb barracuda for just under £100 ends this afternoon(we're past midnight so its wednesday.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who commented.

Went with my gut and got

i5 2500k

corsair force series 3 120GB for OS

8gb kingston genesis grey

Antec Kuhler h20 620

Asrock z68 extreme4 gen3

WD 1TB 3.5" SATA-III 6Gb/s Caviar Black Hard Drive - 7200rpm 64MB Cache for games and general storage

Fractal Design Define R3 Black Pearl Case

windows 7 pro 64

And it's running brilliantly. I got 7.5 on windows experience index. :D

Haven't tried an OC yet though:o
