The Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground and started to sink near Giglio last night:

Three people are confirmed dead after a cruise ship carrying more than 4,000 people ran aground off Italy.

The Costa Concordia hit a sandbar on Friday evening near the island of Giglio and listed about 20 degrees, after which people tried to reach land in lifeboats or by swimming.

Rescue teams have been going from cabin to cabin, searching for survivors.
Italians, Germans, French and British were among the 3,200 passengers. There were also 1,000 crew on board.

Helicopters evacuated the last 50 people on the deck who were in a "worsening" situation.

Three people were confirmed dead, Italian coast guard officials said on Saturday morning - fewer than the six or eight deaths reported by Italian media earlier.

Who would believe that in this day and age one of these very modern mega cruise ships (2006) with all its technology could come so close to a complete disaster.

Do you think they'll be able to salvage her? It is only partially submerged.

I really don't know. She's a monster:

Tonnage: 114,500 GT
Length: 950 ft (290 m)
Beam: 118 ft (36 m)
Speed: service: 21.5 knots (39.8 km/h; 24.7 mph)
maximum: 23 knots (43 km/h; 26 mph)
Capacity: 3,700 passengers
Crew: 1,100

I suppose it's possible. I bet the insurers will make sure they have a very good go at re-floating her.

So they'll obviously refloat it, wonder if will go for scrap or will they refit.

On the news this morning they said it would be too big to re-float and that they would have to cut it up. I don’t know whether a repair/re-float is a viable option given the size and length of that gash.

They dont need to, the ship will tender in to small ports.

The ship stops way out from the port, and then you board small boats to take you to port.

This was taken from the small tender boat, about halfway between the ship and port, so you can see how far out is stops:

What ship and where?

They manage to “park” them quite close to the coast as well. This one is in the channel between the island of Lokrum and the coast just southeast of Dubrovnik:
