Alonso with Ferrari until 2016

I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would want to go and be his teammate there. Rubens and Filipe will tell you what happens at Ferrari when they have a clear number one driver. If Filipe has any sense he'll be telling his manager to go sound out Renault in case Kubica doesn't make it back.

Same reason anyone would be Hamilton or Vettel's team mate I guess :)

And it's Felipe ;)

Hehehe.

Not everybody has the ability to be a lead (No.1) driver.

Somebody like Heikki understands this (he was Hamilton's team-mate for a couple of years and took one heck of a battering). A driver of that ilk would quite happily move to Ferrari and be the No.2 driver. Nothing wrong with this.

Irvine was happy to fill this role and has financially done very well for himself. He is one of the most wealthiest F1 drivers of all time. He can also say that he drove for the biggest name in F1 - Ferrari and that he drove alongside the most decorated driver in F1 - MSc.

There are plenty of reasons why being a No.2 driver at Ferrari would attract decent F1 drivers.

Hell, if I was an F1 driver and was not in the same category as Alonso/Hamilton, I would consider driving alongside Alonso as the No.2 driver, a great career move.

It didn't exactly do hamiltons reputation any harm being his team mate!

If you were confident you could be as fast or faster than Alonso it would be a great seat to take, you would gain a massive reputation boost ... if you were likely to be slower than Alonso, then you'd end up like Felipe or Rubens no doubt!

I don't see the same kind of driver preference going on in Ferrari as there was in the Schumacher days, Felipe seems to at least have the same opportunity and machinery at this stage of the season, even if he will no doubt have to capitulate if later in the season Alonso is their best chance for the championship.

And you never know what might happen. Irvine had a decent chance at the title after Shumi broke his leg, something he never would have had if he hadn't been at Ferrari.

Irvine did well for himself at Ferrari but that's not why he's wealthy. he put a lot of his money into property and I believe wasn't exactly poor when he joined.

I doubt Alonso would let Ferrari hire anyone who'd challenge him. hamilton and The Whinging Spaniard didn't get on an McLaren as Alonso clearly expected preferential treatment but Mclaren have never done that and probably never will. I suspect the Felipe won't get the whole teams support ever unless it's mathmatically impossible for ALonso to win the championship.

Irvine earned most of his F1 money from Ferrari. He then invested wisely and increased his wealth.

Ferrari were instrumental to Irvine's current fortune. Had he not joined Ferrari, there is no way that he would've amassed such a fortune.

...and why should he? If I were in his position (ie. rated as the best driver in F1), I too would like the entire team to be based around me. I would ensure that my contract stated that I was No.1 and that no joining driver would ever be given preferential treatment, over me.

I don't quite understand why people have a problem with this.

DC and Heikki will tell you otherwise :p

Lewis whinges more than Alonso also especially at his own team....

I think it's a fallacy to think that Alonso wouldn't want a competetive team mate. It's easier to win the world championship if your team mate is taking points off the competition. However in Alonsos position it would be quite reasonable to only want a team mate who works with him rather than against him, which might exclude certain drivers! I suspect he is confident enough in his own abilities to beat any driver on equal terms (as any F1 driver should be!)

Mclaren have a history of favouring one driver over another that goes back to the 80s. Lauda, Prost, Senna Prost, Coulthard Hakkinen, Coulthard Raikkonen, Raikkonen Montoya, Alonso Hamilton, Hamilton Kovalainen to name but a few! With every one of those pairings one of the drivers claimed favouritism was given to one driver over the other - in some cases it was clear, in the others no smoke without fire I say.
Just because they claim to treat the drivers equally doesn't make it so.! At the end of the day it's the teams choice to do so unless otherwise specified in the drivers contract.

I disagree about Felippe too. I think if he started the season strongly and in races looked clearly faster and more likely to score points in the future than Alonso it would be Felippe they would be supporting to the championship. The fact is though that on a good day Felippe matches Alonsos pace, on a bad day (and there are plenty of those) he is nowhere in comparison and I can't see that changing any time soon. Unless it does I'm sure once we get mid season again the teams focus again will switch more heavily on Alonso than Massa again.
You can't blame the team either - they are in it to win, and its a no brainer to focus efforts behind the driver who gives you the best chance of winning.

All top drivers want their "own" team. Who wouldn't?

If I was an F1 driver, I would love to be the focus of all r+d and have a team-mate who is there to assist me to score maximum points for myself.

A driver would have to be insane to not want such an arrangement.

Indeed, only some are good enough to get such a position though, but that is a negative to some fans I guess :D

Interesting comments today, Stefano Domenicali saying Alonso's new deal does not rule out Hamilton being at Ferrari, and Vettel saying much the same that it does not make him feel that going to Ferrari would be a bad thing :)

Many drivers would love to go to Ferrari and race against Alonso, no2 at Ferrari is still going to be better than no1 at the drinks company :D
