Anyone got on of these Alpine iPod adapters in their car?

I've just bought one and I'm finding it fricking annoying to use so far.

Never had an iPod before so I bought one last week and then the adapter for my head unit too. Glovebox out over the weekend and fitted it nicely out the way. The sound quality is excellent and it all works fine, but the interface to change and search tracks and albums is awful.

I can either:

Search by playlist, bearing in mind I've got no playlists done yet, and wasn't planning on doing either.

Search by atrist name, which always starts with the first alphabetically no matter what ou were listening to already, and you have to scroll down the list with the volume wheel. Now I've got a few hundred artists on here so getting to scroll thorugh all the A's and B's is enough to make my fingers ache let alone L's or M's, and if you stop scrolling for more than a few seconds it goes back to normal display and you start again.

Search by album name, which also starts from the top of the list alphabetically with the same problems as above.

I can scroll through the tracks in the current album playing which is fine.

But when you get to the last track of an ablum and expect it to move onto the next album it doesn't, it goes back to the start of that album and plays it again.

I've also tried to get it to play either a random album or just a random track and that doesn't work.

I've read the manual before you ask and there doesn't seem to be any more to it. I just can't believe it's this hard to use.

Anyone...?

I've got the same one i think (9850Ri or something) and yea, its not the most intuitive of interfaces! So i'm with you on needing some help with it

They aren't the easiest things to use for searching I find. Especially if you have a ton of music. :p

I usually just unplug my ipod, find the album and play it then plug it back in :o

I've had one since launch.

They really need a revamp, if they havent changed anything since they were introduced!

It's as bad and as slow to navigate as you say, and there's nothing that can be done about it. I've had numerous near misses due to this thing.

I have a Alpine 9850ri. I find it is easier to unplug the ipod and find an album using the ipod. Start it playing then plug it back in tot he head unit. Not something you can do while driving. But still ten times quicker than using the head unit.

Yep I do but it's still a pain as I have SO much music so having 40 / 50 playlists is still a ballache :p

Unplug, find, replug :)

Thanks for all the replies.

Been having a play with it again this evening and got a bit further with it all.

I've cut down all of my random tracks where I just have one track by an artist and not the whole album, so I'm down to 250 albums in total. So searching through is still a major pain but it's still about half of what it was.

I have also got the random file or album function to work. So now I can just leave it playing and it will just randomise the whole ipod collection. It seems that if you search for an album and play it you are then stuck in that album unless you either search again for another artist or album, or you select the overall ipod playlist to go up to the top level so to speak again. Thats when you can turn on the random function.

Well anyway, I'm a bit happier with it. Was looking at taking the adapter back for a refund and selling my head unit and buying a new one of a different brand earlier :(

Thanks

Nick

I've got annoyed by mine too, might try the unplug trick, was using an MP3 CD with a boat load of my better songs on.
