As above really as iv heard that you can only use PAK code to keep the same number when your moving between providers, not if you want to stay with the same provider and just get a new contract instead of upgrading.
Usually at the end of a phone contract it goes onto a rolling monthly contract and you keep the number. You usually get some (generally naff) "upgrade" options which will lock you into a new 12+ month contract but you keep the number. Otherwise cancel and use the PAK code to sign up again.

Just keep using your old contract it will remain the same. They may ring you and ask if you want to upgrade or you can ring them and reqest an upgrade. If you liked your old contract just take the new phone and remain on the same one....unless they offer you a better deal but they cant make you move. I do it all the time unless you wish to leave.
Also don't bother cancelling you can usually get them to put you onto one of the available contracts if you phone up - I pretty much halved my bill with only a minor sacrifice of features this way.
