AltaVista goes to great server in the sky

Do you have fond recollections of AltaVista or other sites from the early days of the internet?

I remember before google took over the world I used to use altavista a lot even other like ask.co.uk or web crawler......

I'm not sure of when I first heard of Google.. though I do remember before they existed and I used things like AltaVista, the wonderful times of Netscape Navigator, Compuserve dial-up and my first forays in to IRC chat (A/S/L?!).

AltaVista was my choice, until google came along and i never looked back.

Google on a 56k was just a dream in comparison to the advert laden world of 90's/00 search engines!

Nostalgia says i should morn its loss but in reality it was never that good!

Hope they retain the address and don't let it fall into some idiots hands.. part of internet history.

I was never a fan of Ask Jeeves/Ask as it never seemed to return useful information so for me, prior to google at least Yahoo, Altavista and Lycos were my choice
