Well, the title says it all. I want a straight forward text based approach instead of all the graphics, backgrounds and so forth. Anyone got any suggestions please?

I'm currently using miranda, you can run it stand alone across installs, and it can use a large number of protocols :)

have you run apatch on msn messenger? it removes all the ads and crap from it, makes it a lot more slender :)

also, go into Tools, Options, Tabs hide/remove tabs -in the standard msn window options

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I have Trilliam running at *** moment so I'll see how it goes. It is interesting to see that these alternative programs can manage to cope with multiple messaging services and that is a bonus.

Another vote for Pidgin, although I've not used it under windows only linux.

Supports:
AIM
Bonjour
Gadu-Gadu
Google Talk
Groupwise
ICQ
IRC
MSN
MySpaceIM
QQ
SILC
SIMPLE
Sametime
XMPP
Yahoo!
Zephyr

Super program...
