On Linux there are a few alternatives (such as Gnash), but I don't believe there are any for Windows.

Silverlight is another platform that's similar to Flash. If you want something to replace Flash but run embedded Flash objects then no, there isn't anything as it's a proprietary format (for Windows anyway).

It entirely depends on what you're trying to do. Are you authoring content or viewing it? If the latter are you wanting to use it offline or within a web-browser?

Flash player always seems to cause problem with my firefox and opera the latest version keeps crashing the browser for some reason.

If you're using Vista have a run through some of my threads in this subforum. I never got it working correctly, only upgrading to Win 7 seems to have done it.
