Alternative to Gmail app?

So,

I was holding off, and holding off on getting a new phone. But finally, my trusty Galaxy S4 peed me off enough, and I bit the bullet, and went for a Moto X Play.

I was gonna wait for the Sony Z5, but figured that with the 810 processor being one I have been avoiding for the last 6 months, I would wait for the 820 hopefully early next year.

Samsung ruined the S6 for me by ditching the SD slot too. So that was out.

Nexus wont have an SD slot either, and can't be hooped with waiting on an invite for a OnePlus 2. If I could actually buy one, I'd probably have it (despite the 810 processor).

Anyway, happy with my decision. Only gonna stand me around £230, and I'll be able to swap it out for whatever I want next year.

So, with that all being said. I see there is no "stock" email app on my X Play. WTF??? I actually HATE the gmail app for emails. HATE it. Never used it on any of my previous phones, because it's horrible. Sooooooo slow to update my main email account (it's an AOL account, I know, but I've had it since I bought my first computer).

Anyway, the point is that the gmail app is terrible. The stock email app isn't compatible, so I can't download it. So what are my options here? What is a good alternative app I can use? Something free preferably, and without loads of ads.

TDLR - Gmail app for Android sucks. Stock email doesn't work. What do I do?

Nine is head and shoulders above anything else available but it ain't free and it sounds like you are wanting the quite a lot without having to pay which just isn't going to happen. I use it for my work exchange account and it is brilliant.

I also find the stock Gmail app to be superb, I have 4 different accounts being handled with it and it just works. What specifically doesn't work for you?

I don't mind paying if it's worth it.

I haven't yet found an email app that works with my work email. Especially since they now require a "hard token" pin that changes every 30 seconds. If I could get something to work with that, then I'd happily pay. Although I suspect that my work wouldn't like it so much.

I don't see that I'm looking for a lot. All I want is for it to check for my email more often really. I mean, I really don't like the way Gmail is set out. But the main thing is, I want my AOL email checked so often it's like it's a push service. If I could change the interval to every 2 or 5 minutes, I'd be happy. I hate having to manually go in and check for emails. If this is the way Android is going, I might try iPhone next, and hate Apple too.

I have the gmail app set up with my hotmail account and the sync frequency is set to push - I can't say I've ever noticed anything not coming through in real time?
