is there a cheaper alternative that works great to connect the xbox 360 via wireless to my wireless network, i have a sky (sagem) adsl modem/router;)

You could use a Wireless Access Point. Its a little bigger than the wireless receiver and can take a bit of work to get it up and running :P

Considered home plugs?

hi i am aware they can be used for networking but what would i need and what would it cost ?

a guy in toysrus sold my missus an access point at £15 but on this thread earlier today i was told it was not possible to use this

Homeplugs are the 'easiest' as they are transparent..

Plug one in near your router and connect to router via one ethernet cable, plug the other near your 360 and plug an ethernet cable into that,
Notionally, it's then as if the 360 was plugged directly into the router via an ethernet cable...

You only need the 85mbps homeplugs which are not too expensive these days, but for me they've been a whole heap more reliable with less
latency then my wireless..

[edit]
In that other thread you linked to the F5D7132 Wireless Extender.. if this is the case, and it has an ethernet port on the back, then it may be OK.. What exactly is it? you mention it's a router.. but it doesn't look like it from your link?

Ahh, just looked at the manual for that F5D7132, it can't operate as a wireless bridge so it would seem, so that's a no go..

I used a wireless access point for some time, it worked okay apart from ports! I could never let my main router accept the Access point in the DMZ list.

I think you do need to change certain settings on the access point though?

You can use a wireless bridge. I don't think an access point will work unless it has some special extra features. You want a "bridge". These are designed to essentially convert an ethernet port to a wireless connection. I've used a D-Link one with my Xbox 1 and 360. However, they aren't that cheap, and not going to save you much over the official wireless dongle.

I'd suggest either homeplugs (which tbh are nearly as expensive as the wireless adapter from what i've seen) or a nice long ethernet cable.

I use an old linksys WRT54G flashed with DD WRT firmware. Works really well with the xbox plugging into it and I've got it repeating my wireless network too for extended range.

well i need something that is simple to set up, i have just connected the xbox up using a long ethernet cable but its trailing down the stairs.:D

it would be a bit awkward routing a cable so it cant be seen so i think ill look at the 2 hope plugs as this sound like a relatively easy way to set up.

thanks for all the help guys

demon yes it is that access point / extender that is in the link :(

I still don't understand why people don't just buy one. For the sake of £30 is it really worth bothering with? I'd imagine a router/homeplugs etc cost at least half that annway.

Robert, im in Paisley, i just bought a double set of new homeplugs when i moved house, if you have a couple of ethernet cables, and want to drive to paisley, you can have my old one i used, they came free with the BT tv thing, but i dont have it anymore, tested and working fine on xbox too.

Drop me a main on trust if you want them.

If your computer is in range of your 360 then just ethernet cable to your PC then share the wireless connection or bridge it. No point wasting money on a wireless adapter or homeplugs if your comp is close.
