Alternative to thermal paste?

Hey all

Tomorrow, i reckon i'm gonna clean out my Socket A cpu... But since i havnt removed the CPU for a while.. i've got a feeling that there will be little or no thermal paste left. Since i dont have any handy.. i was thinking if there was a household alternative ?

right, i found that if you mix tooth paste and vaseline, it can be pretty good..

But apparently tooth paste corrodes.. so it would only be a temporary issue..

Well i went to a local computer shop and managed to get some stuff for free... but i was just wondering how much better artic silver is? Will it reduce temps a lot?
