Hi there,

I am looking for basically, notepad with a spell checker. Something really small.

Note: I am NOT looking for an office suite just an alternative to word. So not open office.

Thanks.

I've just tried Metapad with ASpell,
fast, but ASpell is a a bit clunky (uses external viewer to S/C).

anyone got notepad with an inline spellchecker ?

You can install OpenOffice without the other applications... just like you can install MS Office without Access et al if you don't need it.

Yes but open office is very bloaty with a lot of things running at startup etc which i don't want.

I want a small program that will load quickly on a slow pc.

Outlook Express.

Compose a new email, use OE's spellcheck, cut'n'paste to notepad or wordpad. :D

No but gVim and the add-on spell checker is inline. See my most above. You can also get eVim if you want it to be more like notepad.

I use an old version of word, which is part of Office 97, because it loads much quicker (almost instantly).

You could also try Lotus word pro 97 which also loads faster than the later versions of MS word.

I tried Abiword but it loaded too slowly for me as did Open Office.

Most of time I only need a basic word processer and hate bloaty slow software.

GVIM (thanks JustinW)
looks a bit like VIM, can't find a spellcheck tool for Win

EVIM, can't find a Win port

textedit

loads OK, spellcheck uses MS Word
(and then leaves Word open...)

CPad

OK, bit slow, but does not open with blank doc, you have to select one first - I find that a bit annoying.

this is gettting a bit silly, someone must do plain notepad + spellcheck ?

I did this myself with a DOS TSR program with borland spellchecker, I should have kept the darn thing :-)
