Alternatives to Steam?

Are there any alternatives to Steam? I'm after BF 1942 and 2142 but Steam only has BF2.

Buy them in a shop and make a shortcut in steam, IMO EA DL is a waste of time, and feels a bit of a hungry piece of software.

The EA downloader from what I've seen absolutely rapes your connection, even when downloading slowly.

Steam seems quite happy DLing at anything upto 2MB without a problem.

I just got BF 2142 using the EA downloader without enduring too much rage. If you get some of the coke zone vouchers from the multi packs you can get a £10 off EA Store voucher which will get you it for free.

EADM has been great for me.

Install Special Forces for BF2 retail without any issues on 2 different computers.

Got Dragon Age as well, all fine, downloaded, installed, played. Came in at 50-60% of Steam's file size as well.

Trying to get the programmer back on BF2142 still, he is being tied up on BFBC2 PC version.

As for the changelist you know this is a small update in terms of fixes and is aimed at adding more security fixes onto accounts to stop spoofing.


Other things you will see are:
No DRM method on the exe as with BF2 (No more SafeDisc, PACE or SecuROM (depending on which version of BF2142 you have) and no more errors from EADM saying you need to log in to EADM to verify ownership even if you are logged in)

Two brand new maps from community modder Jason Brice (more on this later)
Northern Strike will be available to EVERYONE
Also yes, BF2142 Deluxe Edition is heading to Steam and Direct2Drive (and all other online retailers you see selling BF2 Complete Collection) once BF2142 1.51 is done.

The voucher costs 20 points. If I remember correctly I got enough points from 3 x 6 can packs and the 5 points when I signed up.

Interesting, i find if im downloading on steam it hogs all the bandwith. I and everyone else at home then struggle to even surf the net. I do all steam updates/ downloads at night now.
