Alternatives to transport tycoon deluxe

I've been playing TTD this morning yet again and I'm really wishing I had a newer up to date version. I didn't like Locomotion or most of the other "tycoon" series but does anyone know of any other similar games?

I know I've just ruled most of them out

I could be wrong, and I would be interested to be proved wrong, but I honestly believe TTD is out there on its own. As you say, Locomotion is the only similar games (in respects to the gameplay dynamic), and like you I wasn't overly impressed with it, though I can't quite put my finger on why.

I really think the only game like TTD... is TTD!

Have you tried OpenTTD? It's very much the same with updated stuff that's open source. You need the original game files to play it but since you've got TTD already, that's sorted
