Alton Towers are set to open a new wooden rollercoaster this year... the Wicker Man.

Oooo how spooooOooooOOoky. Looks fun! I, for one, shall be riding.

In b4 injury lawyers 4 u.

Also, AT’s hotel website is unspeakably bad. As is their hotel, actually.

I'm looking forward to this one. I went in the summer last year and saw it being built, the footprint looked quite impressive at the time. I'll have to see who I can drag down with me! :)

I don't think it's the material per se that makes them so popular. It's that they generally don't have inversions, so they have a lap bar, and it's old school. Since they don't have inversions, the track layout is a totally different ride to most new coasters. I think coaster nuts also like the noise the trains make due to the materials used in the track.

The best wooden coaster I've been on was Stampida in Spain - literally so fast and shaky that a few goes resulted in a headache (and a lost phone). Sounds awful but you literally felt like the whole thing was out of control for 50% of the ride.

I think that's the main appeal - the adrenaline rush of feeling like it's about to collapse!

They replaced the log flume for this which including the removal of ripsaw means no way to cool down in the blistering heat of summer!

Battle Galleons?

I remember going on the wooden coaster at Busch Gardens in Florida - Gwazi. The experience was ridiculous - so fast, bumping around everywhere and not strapped in.
