not sure if this is the right section, but given the way i always leave my pc on in stand by mode and the way the x1 is apparently on same with tvs and hifis etc which makes me ask the question. are electrical equipment always switched on or are they never really off??

If any electrical equipment is not switched off at the wall or their PSU they are always on stand by tbh and drinking a little electrical power... they are in effect in a state of stand by ready for when you need them again.

Obvious answer is, how would the Government/NSA/aliens/lizard people* spy on you if stuff was really switched off?

*delete as applicable

lol thats what i was thinking. i take it the days of either on or off are long gone.

guess it could be classed as a stupid question which doesnt have a correcy answer

The only way things are truly "off" these days is if you pull them from the wall and let the remaining electricity get expended from the caps.

With the world moving towards always on, pick up and go, plug and play..etc products seem to be more and more designed to be left in a standby mode, I prefer it really. I'd rather have my appliances and gadgets spring into life and pay an extra 3 quid a month on Lecky.

The motherboard is in a soft off state as said

I'm fine with things being on standby... However...I prefer things to be off while not there

Personally not keen on leaving a watercooled setup running whilst I'm out of the house, I know it's unlikely to leak, but if it did there'd be a hell of a mess to clean up & possibly damaged components.

Also with SSD's these days, my machine takes seconds to be get to the desktop

I never switch my stuff off.

The moment my backs turned, the wife is on ebay. Its a waste of time to turn it off because when I do, she has a go at me.

I am also tryign to recover freom an accident and I have my bed now downstairs in the living room, and so its nice to also have some nice soothing music through the night to help me sleep.... Admittedly, Skrillex isnt the most soothing music I grant you!
