AM Cooler

A replacement card, costing the same as most decent 3rd party coolers, £25 or so, will perform better, give you things like video decoding and the like, be way smaller and use 20% of the power. IE, cooler for x1950xt is money down the drain.

IE £20 for http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-193-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1711

or £17 for http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-047-AK&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=787

Actually to be fair I have no idea how to easily compar performance from a 1950xt to something current, as no one does it. It might take something a tad more powerful to be on par or faster than a 1950xt in raw power, so you might be looking at finding the cheapest 6550/70 which is £40-50. Still feel its a much better value.

Of course the other option is, assuming its the fan that's died on the 1950xt, is to buy any old £5 fan and ziptie on to the original cooler, depends whats wrong with the original cooler.

Thanks for the replies. The fan is too loud, I picked the card up dead cheap and it runs the games I want to play well, it's just the noise for me. I might look at picking up the radeon 5450. I wonder if the performance would increase with this card?

Try decrease. The X1950XT is an old warhorse so you would be better off sticking with that. However since you don't seem to mind buying 2nd hand goods keep an eye out for a 2nd hand Radeon 5770 or 5750 I don't know what they go for 2nd hand these days but prior to the recent Radeon 7000 series launch they would go for £40 to £50 so you might be able to get it a bit cheaper and one of these would be a massive upgrade for you.

edit:
The great thing with the 5750/5770 is the low power use means they don't create as much heat as your typical high end cards (like you X1950 was once) so noise from the fan should be more agreeable.

thanks Freddie, so if I were to stick with this card (which is most likely) could you recommend a good cooler to replace the stock one to keep it a bit cooler and quieter. Would it be possible to grab one for £10-£15 mark?
