I had just finished putting a custom waterloop on my CPU and everything seemed to have gone well. I turned on the PC and booted straight into windows no problem. The first thing I did then was start up HWmonitor to get the CPU temps, shock and horror they are all close to 50c (this is @4.0ghz). The next thing I did was run prime95 for a few minutes and the temps are reaching 80c.

Time to lift the w/block and try again with more paste - still no good so I then tried adjusting the mounting nuts thinking the block was not on square - still no good.

I then lifted the block and cleaned off the paste and noticed I have got a score mark on the block where it had been pressing against the edge of the CPU - now I am in trouble. I then noticed something not quite right with the block - I had not removed the clear cellophane off the bottom of the waterblock.

WHAT AN IDIOT

Once I had removed the cellophane and reseated the block the temps were now in the high 20s to low 30s and running prime the temps were in the low 40s

I hope no one repeats the same mistake I made

I know people who have left on the plastic cover on the stock air coolers.

First time i've seen it on a WC build.

But as long as its sorted... Nice.

And you are a bit of a div.

Yes been there and done that on an AMD K5 processor, left the cellophane on the preinstalled TIM on the stock cooler. Took me a couple of hours to realise.

Luckily in those days, cooling was less critical.

i have seen the cellophane on air coolers but cant remember seeing one on any blocks i have had.
good job you checked the temps out.

now get those gpu's under water :)

Havent done that myself but managed to pee off a mate of mine when I visited. He had just put a new cooler in his PC and the old one was lying on the desk. I asked what was wrong with it and looked at it, only to realise the film was still on - a bit burned :) I showed him this and he must have felt how you felt once you realised this :)

And now I am an idiot too. Was investigating a GFX related crash and removed a full cover waterblock from one of my GTX cards only to find that the thermal pad for the memory VRMs still had protective plastic on one side.

Doh! Removed and running fine now thank you very much :)

Just done a loop on mine -

res / pump -> cpu (i7 haswell @ 4.00ghz) -> 120mm rad -> gpu 1 (gtx680) -> gpu 2 (gtx680) -> res pump

Getting around 60c maxing at 70c on prime95.

I've gone more for silent operation than performance it has to be said. Cards under full load 54c / 56c - which is stonking given they where 75c ++ before and noisy fans to boot!

Next time you do a WC loop, just make sure you're wearing a helmet and you'll probably be fine. :D

My friend's going watercooled soon, and I've said to him he's not allowed to do it himself, and insisted that I'm doing it, as I KNOW he'll kill his parts in some way.

Last time he built a PC, he places fans in the wrong directions where they were basically cancelling each other out.

PEBKAC is one of his hobbies, so there's this running joke that he's just cursed when it comes to technology.

I fried a CPU doing that with an air cooler, it was an expensive mistake but taught me not to do it again now im paranoid about checking it.

Well spotted Kaapy, its easily done m8, done it on one of my son's builds lucky he was there and spotted it as he was reading the installation info at the time.

Something you don't like to admit to,
Oldphart.:o

Guilty of this one as well. Another faux pas was forgetting to apply thermal paste after even meticulously cleaning the cpu and cooler base. Too many birthdays have taken their toll on my memory.:D

I peeled one of the "peel me off before use" stickers from a skt478 Pentium 4 cooler which had been in use for 6 years a few years ago. No, I didn't install it in the first place :p
