On my main volume, Macintosh Hard Drive, I now can't create new folders!

I can in sub folders from it, I have created new folders there before, what the hell have I done?

Does it give an error message? It might want you to authenticate as the superuser before modifying the root directory.

Nope, its just not an option. If I try to drop a folder into it I then get the message I don't have access to do that, it then asks me to put my password in, if I do that then it moves it there.

How do I authenticate as a superuser?

Have you tried repairing permissions in disk utility?
