Okay, thanks in part to the recent thread regarding Mercedes-Benz 190E's (pure pimping style) I cant get them out of my head. Ever since I was a small child I'd lust after this retro 80's style icon, its just filth!!

Now for the sensible stuff. I'm currently driving a Rover 200 (1999), its been very tastefully modified by the previous owner (lowered, nice 16" momo alloys, colour coded spoilers front and rear, colour coded wing mirrors etc etc. 63k miles)

Do I trade in the Rover and buy what effectively is going to be a 15+ year old car? I've seen one on autotrader I love. It's a 2.6 automatic (wish it was manual) 1990 190E. lowered, full leather and 106k miles. If I knew how to link it on here i would :( (if anyones interested, go to autotrader and put in the postcode CW2 5PR and its listed for £1500.)

So, am I being stupid? It's 16 years old for gods sake! But somethings telling me to check this baby out! confused :(

I say, if you really get something into your head, go for it, or be cursed by the nagging....

I went for it.

100k+ is NOTHING to a decent Merc, however, most Mercs of that vintage will have done FAR more, but, hide it oh, so well. (1990 Merc 190e 2.6 with 107k? , hmm, I DON'T THINK SO! )

Tread VERY carefully.

Don't buy the first car you see, however tempting, and drive as many examples as you can, to give you some idea of the feel of the cars.

I don't regret my choice of car, but, I did'nt nor have I kidded myself its cheap to run properly, it isn't andl a vintage Merc won't be either, I assure you.

P.S. Do I regret it? Yes when I think about it, No when I get in the car and drive it. :rolleyes: :o

age isnt everything. the 190E was a car that was built to last, and that engine will go a lot further. You only live once mate, and if its what you want and its within your means then do it.
Dunno if I like the chrome wheelarch guards though :p

Darn, I suppose 6k a year is VERY low :(

You mention you're Merc has high running costs? Are we talking MPG, Servcing etc? Or mechanical issues? (I'd be used to mechanical brake downs, what with having a Rover :) )

I think I'll do as you say though, and start kicking some tyres to see how they go :)
 
My brother in law has a diesel one with the auto box,dark green metallic with the arch trims on.Looks stunning. But check out the fuel consumption on these babies cuz they can really drink it and it won't feel as nimble as your rover.
 
Beautiful. Don't buy Merc manuals. They haven't made a decent manual box for 30 years........

The 2.6's really shift, given their weight too. Looks in very fine fettle :)
 
Go for it mate, like others have said you'll only regret it if you don't. Oh and as stated above, 107k miles YEAH RIGHT!

Clocked to hundred thou, maybe a tad obvious.....oh i know i'll make it 107! These people crack me up :p

Don't be scared of high mileage examples, at 15yrs old condition is far more important than the odometer. Good luck with your search. :)

They are great cars but not great luxo barges - it was a BMW 3 Series rival and equipped as such.
