Basically im toying with getting an E8400/E8600 but can you take a look at my benchies and see if you think im CPU limited.

Spec in sig but ain elements are :

E6750 @ 3.4Ghz
4Gb Kingston HyperX PC8500 @ 6-6-6-18
8800GTX SLI
Asus P5N32-E SLI 680i
Corsair 750w PSU

Benchies :

3DM06 : 15011; SM2 : 6752; SM3 7987; CPU 2929

3DM Vantage ( Performance ) : P13184; GPU : 11395; CPU 24925

FarCry 2 bencie thats in the GFX forum : DX9 : 50.36, DX10 : 53.68

CPU limited do you think?

You'd improve you benchmark scores with a higher clocked dual or similar clocked quad so you could call that CPU limited.

However if you play real games at a high resolution your CPU is more than fast enough as you will be GPU limited even with dual 8800's

I have Dual 8800GTS 512's and I gain approx 1.5fps in Crysis @ 19x12 DX10 (~40fps) by oc'ing a Q6600 from 3.0 to 3.6 so I just leave it at 3.0

I'm not sure your board will like the 45nm CPU's.... some 680's do... others don't support or can't OC to high FSB's

At 3.4Ghz I'd stick with what you have in the short term, you may gain a few frames but it won't be a revolution

Test it yourself. Slowly reduce your cpu overclock and see what hit your gpu score in vantage and fps in farcry takes. Then overclock to see if those same scores increase. Try a couple of other intensive games, crysis demo and a few others are free.

You'll be more limited in benchmarks most of the time. As you have shown, it's not a great performance increase anway.

I would say the 680i is the weak link. You can push an E8400 to 4ghz on the right board so might be worth you getting a new Intel chipset mobo for sub £100.

What's your gaming experience like? It sounds a little like you are upgrading for the sake of it? What about flogging your 8800's and getting a newer, better performing single card?

I get a big frame gain (in crysis/FC2 for example) when overclocking my Quad 9650 (extreme) from 3gig to 3.6/3.8, maybe overclocked quads do better the duo's in games?. My 3D mark is about 19.5K with two GTX8800 in SLI (@3.6) and about 16k @ 3.0.

Is that 3dmark06 score in vista or xp?

Well tbh, going from stock 2.66 to 3.4 only gave a few frames improvement in FarCry2

Will it not push any further? I've just pushed a E5200 to 4GHz on air without much of an effort.

If I were you, sell the GTX's and put the money towards a 4870 X2. You'll get much more FPS with that and more of a push on the OC!

good work dude!

Nearly blew it yesterday though pal. Left orthos running whislt I had a bath - bathroom is directly above the computer room... cover was off the case and it was on it's side on the desk. Came down afterwards and it was covered in water all down the screen, inside the case, on the motherboard/ram/psu. The bath had leaked. It was still going stable too!!!

Booted down quick and dried it out with a hairdryer. Eye's almost popped out my skull when I walked in!

I've noticed though, in the past, that no matter how inadvertantly i've abused my pc with static, too much hardware blowing up my 200 watt psu, dropping my GFX card, forcing stuff in my case, putting forgetting to wire fans up etc it' never actually broke down....... On the other hand my new pc, with nortan 360 in asll it's glory, along with spyware D.R and updated Bios, Always running at stock - never stops crashing, BSOD'ing, freezing. May have to start abusing it.....
